Masked mobs hijacked a nationwide day of protest, torcxhing a 143-year-old town hall, storming government buildings and fighting police in the streets. In the middle of the chaos, protesters waved Palestinian flags.

In the heart of Paris, demonstrators climbed the monument at Place de la République, the towering statue of Marianne that symbolizes the French Republic. A Reuters photographer captured them perched on it holding a French tricolor alongside a Palestinian flag amid pink smoke. One outlet reported that rioters pulled down the statue’s French flag and hoisted a Palestinian banner in its place.

The flags turned up well beyond Paris.

In Marseille, several dozen mostly young protesters battered through the doors of City Hall and briefly overran the lobby, according to Agence France-Presse. They overturned tables and chairs, smashed a screen, and knocked a bust of Marianne to the floor. Some of the intruders wore yellow vests. Others carried Palestinian flags. Someone spray-painted an anarchist symbol on the wall.

Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan said he had to phone President Emmanuel Macron, the prime minister and the interior minister to get reinforcements. The city went from one riot police comany that morning to three, plus two armored units.

In Strasbourg, a local news site counted some Palestinian flags among thousands of marchers packed into Place Kléber. The same flags had appeared at student marches there earlier this month. Video given to Fox News also showed a Paris mob carrying Soviet and communist flags.

The worst destruction hit Limoges in central France. In the evening, a masked gang set a police car on fire outside the city’s landmark town hall, then smashed the windows and set fires inside. The building dates to 1883 and has been a protected monument since 1975. The flames raced to the roof, which caved in on the floors below, and the bell tower came crashing down.

“Two-thirds of the facade is already gone,” local prefect Maurice Barate said.

Rioters set Lyon’s tourist office ablaze.

Mobs looted shops and attacked police in Bordeaux and Lille. In Paris, gangs broke away from the official march route, threw up barricades on the Champs-Élysées, and clashed with cops just blocks from the Élysée Palace. Video circulating online appeared to show a Christian Dior boutique being looted.

By midnight, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said 1,200 people had been arrested and 150 officers injured. He blamed far-left criminals, and vowed the government would not be bullied. Macron promised the attackers would be prosecuted.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez put turnout at 550,000 nationwide, including 110,000 in Paris. Organizers claimed up to 800,000.

The unrest began weeks ago in high schools in Paris’s gritty northern suburbs, over teacher shortages and decaying classrooms. It has since grown into a nationwide revolt over living costs and inequality, six months before France picks a new president.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
