Girls Forced To Compete Against Male Athletes Fight Back

Two female high school athletes in Maine are asking federal officials to intervene after being required to compete against biological males in girls’ sports. 

On Monday, the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a conservative Christian legal group, filed a formal Title IX complaint on behalf of high school juniors Morgan Clark and Reagan Wilson against Maine, the Maine Principals’ Association, and two school districts. The complaint claims that the state’s policies deny girls equal athletic opportunities.

“Title IX has been an extraordinary success story in creating equal athletic opportunity for women and girls,” ADF senior counsel Hal Frampton told The Daily Wire. “That was always its intent, and when states like Maine allow males into women’s sports, it discriminates against women, it hurts women, and it violates Title IX.”

Clark said her varsity soccer team tied an opponent that fielded a male athlete after easily outranking that team in previous years. 

“Last year, this team was ranked 14th in the region, and this year they’re second,” Clark said at a press conference. “Last year, this sort of thing was something I only saw online, but now it’s something that I’m seeing in my own field. If it can happen to me, it can happen to you.”

Wilson has competed in swimming, cross country, indoor and outdoor track, soccer, and softball. She said Maine’s policies mean she has “been forced to compete against male athletes throughout most of my high school athletic career.”

“During my cross-country season, I competed against a biological male in many of my races,” Wilson said at a press conference. “Most recently, I competed against a male playing on an all-girls soccer team. Men are naturally stronger and faster than women due to the muscle growth that testosterone creates. Naturally, the men I competed against displaced several girls across different sports.”

Wilson said it is unacceptable that so many females are being denied equal athletic opportunities.

“Many girls and women are discovering the crushing disappointment that comes from being beaten in their own sports by males who should have never been allowed to compete in the first place,” Wilson said. “If this is happening to you, know you’re standing up for your rights and your safety isn’t wrong.”

Frampton, who also serves as the director of ADF’s Center for Conscience Initiatives, said other female athletes will continue facing male competitors unless officials intervene. 

“We’re seeing this in state after state after state that doesn’t protect women’s sports, we’re seeing biological males compete and come in and dominate and take opportunities from women and women and girls, and we need more complaints like this to try and make it stop,” Frampton told The Daily Wire.

The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights will evaluate ADF’s complaint and determine whether to launch an investigation, according to Frampton.

“There’s no specific time frame that they have to act on, but certainly we are hoping that when they see what’s going on here, that they will act quickly,” Frampton said.
