Nine people, including two children and an unborn baby, were killed Friday evening when a 45-year-old man went on a shooting rampage at a home in Erie, Pennsylvania. The man shot himself after carrying out the deadly rampage.

One of the victims of the attack was a 1-year-old girl named Amarianna whose father Julius Windham identified her grandfather as the murderer, according to the Associated Press. Amarianna’s pregnant mother, identified by friends and family as Angelina Stone, and 5-year-old brother were also killed in the shooting. The unborn baby was also killed.

Windham said he never would have expected the grandfather to be a violent person and that he seemed friendly.

“I think that was a front for him,” he said. “Him every day, him smiling and being just — you would think of nothing like that would happen.”

“Words can’t even explain what I’m going through right now,” Windham added. “But I gotta be strong for my community, you know what I’m saying? My family, my daughters, my sons, everybody.”

Stone was reportedly just days away from giving birth.

“She was pregnant, about to have her baby in a couple days and she had a daughter that was almost 2 and her son Isiah and they were all just beautiful,” a family friend told Erie News Now.

Police have yet to officially release the names of the victims or the attacker.

Others also said they were confused by the attack. Nicole Eller, whose friend was killed during the rampage, said that the attacker “was a good guy” but “then he started going downhill with everything.”

“They were a lovely family. Who would have thought this would ever happen?” said another friend named Debra Eller. “Oh my gosh, this is so upsetting. This should have never happened to her or the kids or anybody. His grandchildren, his kids, how can you do that?”

Police described the scene they found inside the home as incredibly disturbing.

“I want to be candid with our community. This is one of the most difficult and heartbreaking scenes our officers and investigators have ever encountered,” Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said. “The loss of life is devastating, and the circumstances we are working through are deeply disturbing.”

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
