Gillis said:
I haven’t been to the gym in so long. I didn’t know women just dressed like whores now. Look, I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe it. Have you seen it? I’ve seen it. The shorts. Have you seen the shorts? Those neon … the wrinkles go, like, around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole. And don’t look. You’re not allowed to look for real. Don’t look because they are filming. I’m in the background of, like, 10 TikToks right now.
Among the people who were mad was Dan Levy from the show “Schitt’s Creek.” He said:
The gym does not make them whores. It makes the men calling them whores misogynists. There’s a difference there. By the way, I’ve seen more men’s nipples at the gym than I’ve ever seen women showing their bodies off, but I’m speechless that something like that can exist on live national television. How can it even exist?
And to be perfectly honest, more men need to be standing up in opposition to it because it’s complacency that has created the environment with which women are sexually assaulted. And it’s a “conversation” as opposed to a crime. Men need to be defending women more. This is not a women’s issue. This is an everybody issue. Because the more that men objectify women in the media, the more that other men see them as objects and treat them as objects. They are not objects.
Tell me you’re gay without telling me you’re gay. If you are a dude and you’ve seen more men’s nipples at the gym, it’s because you’re looking for men’s nipples.
I should note that Levy and all the people who are upset about the encroachment on female spaces are totally fine with biological men walking into women’s locker rooms.
Also, thank you for your feminist theory class.
The Hollywood Reporter is very upset about it as well, writing:
Maybe it’s a good thing Shane Gillis was fired by Saturday Night Live before he even got started on Saturday. Gillis rubbed a whole lot of people the wrong way with several jokes in his SNL monologue, kind of like he did the first two times he hosted. On Saturday, Gillis (Netflix’s Tires) rubbed a whole lot of people the wrong way with several jokes in his SNL monologue — kind of like he did the first two times he hosted. … The main culprit this past weekend was an observational quip Gillis made about how women dress in the gym. …
SNL attracts liberal talent and a similar audience. It films in New York City and its main target is Donald Trump. The show’s writers and cast members are generally a diverse group of Gen Z-ers that came up in improv, sketch and standup comedy. They don’t listen to Joe Rogan — Gillis’ buddy who, along with Theo Von (and Dan Soder, kind of) got a shoutout in the set — and they don’t drink the Bud Light Gillis endorses. Studio 8H is not the place for gay jokes and jokes against women — at the very least, if you try them, they’d better be really strong. Gillis’ were not. … It wasn’t just the wrong place for the joke — it was decidedly the wrong time.
It’s a joke. You don’t have to like the joke.
But let’s talk about why people are upset about this.
There are two questions. One: Are women dressing in more provocative fashion at the gym than they used to? In the colloquial parlance of Shane Gillis, are they dressing like whores? And two: Are men evil for glancing at scantily-clad women at the gym?
Many women continue to dress like normal human beings at the gym. Most of the women I see at the gym dress like normal human beings.
But there are women at the gym who do not.
I asked the female producers on my show what they thought about some of the scantily-dressed women online. Their comments included, “This feels illegal. … Look at the guys in the background trying to avert their eyes. The guys literally directing their gaze downward toward their phone, just trying not to look. I have to avert my gaze.”
More: “I’d be worried about doing anything in that outfit.” “There’s nothing functional about that top.” “Inappropriate.” “Everyone has a wedgie. You should do it, too.” “You can’t be pissed when someone looks at you. You’re screaming for attention.”
Are some women dressing more inappropriately at the gym than they used to? The answer is pretty clearly yes.
Why do women mimic each other when it comes to fashion? An experiment from 1983 found that 160 women changed their judgments of clothing when they were given more opinions from fashion experts. So, yes. Women tend to herd. The same thing is true with men, but women do it with regard to fashion.
When one woman goes to the gym dressed like this and men start paying attention to her, other young women may also want male attention. The first woman has broken a collective bargaining agreement between the women, and now she’s receiving all the attention.
Now we get to the second part of the question: Men are not supposed to look. Men need to gouge out their eyes with a spoon if women choose to dress inappropriately at the gym.
Let’s be clear about how evolutionary biology works. Men are attracted to women.
The fact that this has to be explained to fully developed adults shows our entire society has lobotomized itself. Because of evolutionary biology, men inherently desire to procreate with as many women as possible, and thus the brain was built so that men direct their attention at undressed women.
That is normal. That’s why the book is called “Where’s Waldo” and not “Where’s Naked Lady?” Because if the book were “Where’s Naked Lady?” a guy could get through it in about 0.7 seconds.
Obviously, there are creepy dudes who exist and stare and ogle women. That’s gross and creepy, and they shouldn’t do it.
But both men and women have agency. Men in America generally are not interested in putting women in burqas — unless you’re in Minneapolis or Dearborn.
Women wearing white coats and stethoscopes to the gym would be inappropriate. It’s also inappropriate if you dress like some of the women, who wear practically nothing.
This is Emperor’s New Clothes kind of stuff: A woman who dresses scantily, takes a picture of herself, posts it online for attention, and then gets upset when people notice.
I will note for the record that the same people who are condemning all men for having eyeballs that connect to their limbic system and testosterone running through their body also condemn Sydney Sweeney as a whore for being in a commercial for a sports betting app.
As a society, we’ve developed a fundamental inability to understand the differences between the sexes. We have to pretend that women and men don’t exist as separate entities.
But the world exists around you. You shouldn’t walk around the world with zero regard for how people will interact with you, or how human beings interact with the world.
If you wear skimpy clothing to the gym, you can expect predictable responses. That doesn’t mean the responses are always right. It also doesn’t mean that if a guy glances at you, he has done something deeply wrong.
There’s a difference between glancing and ogling; one is a natural limbic system response, and the other is a guy being trashy.
But what this really bespeaks — and this is why the Left has bought into all this stuff — is the idea that women are never responsible for any decision they make.
