Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) made an unsuccessful bid to stop fellow Democrat Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) from taking drastic action in Michigan’s contentious Senate race.

Ocasio-Cortez called and texted Stevens about her growing dissatisfaction with Democrat candidate Abdul El-Sayed in the days before she endorsed Republican Mike Rogers, Politico reported Monday. The shocking endorsement came after El-Sayed asked Stevens to not campaign with him and the pair clashed over an anti-Israel campaign ad.

Politico reported that Ocasio-Cortez and Stevens had a 25-minute phone call last Wednesday about the race as the relationship between the Michigan Democrat and El-Sayed soured. The phone call initially appeared to shift Stevens’ opinions as text messages show her thanking Ocasio-Cortez for reaching out.

“[T]hank you so much for talking to me and hearing me,” Stevens texted Ocasio-Cortez, according to the outlet. “It means the world. Now back to the productive stuff.”

“You really did and thank you for talking to me too,” Ocasio-Cortez responded. “I’m sorry again and I’m really glad we got to connect and talk and I hope we are able to more. Sending you a big hug.”

Those messages came after Stevens complained about not being invited to a rally Ocasio-Cortez appeared at in Pontiac, Michigan, in support of El-Sayed.

“Nobody wants the Democratic Party to feel like an exclusive club,” Stevens told Politico last Monday. “It’s starting to feel like AOC comes in and it’s exclusive.”

Stevens narrowly lost to El-Sayed in the Democrat primary, but then quickly endorsed him. Things fell apart over the weekend after it was reported that El-Sayed no longer wanted Stevens to campaign for him. On Sunday, Stevens attended a church service alongside Rogers at Perfecting Church in Detroit before releasing a video endorsing him.

“Hey Michigan, as you may have seen, our Democratic nominee for U.S., Senate, Abdul, said that I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away,” Stevens said Sunday. “And he’s right. And that’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today. I don’t belong in Abdul’s campaign. I do not stand with Hasan Piker.”

Ocasio-Cortez, considered a potential Democrat presidential candidate for 2028, has increasingly flexed her political muscles in races across the country. She has rallied for Democrats across the country, including Democrat Senate candidates Troy Jackson in Maine and Angie Nixon in Florida.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
