The suspect had a lengthy rap sheet, including a grand larceny conviction and previous arrests for assault, robbery, drug possession, and weapons possession.
The shooting happened around 4 p.m. Thursday in the city’s Marble Hill neighborhood — which is near the Bronx — where ICE officers were attempting to arrest the illegal suspect from the Dominican Republic.

Federal officials also said he has ties to the Trinitarios gang, the same gang DHS linked to the shooting of a Customs and Border Protection officer last year.
The suspect is no stranger to New York City police, either.
DHS said the NYPD arrested him on December 7, 2023, only for the city to release him back into the community a few days later. Why? DHS blamed New York’s sanctuary policies for forcing its hand.
Thursday’s attempted arrest ended with an ICE officer firing his weapon and injuring the suspect. DHS said officers immediately provided medical attention before taking the suspect to the hospital.
The NYPD confirmed the suspect was conscious. The department also made clear that its officers were not involved in the federal operation and were not at the scene when the shooting happened.
A 5-year-old child was reportedly sitting in the back of the suspect’s silver SUV during the incident but wasn’t hurt.
What led the ICE officer to open fire is still under investigation as the FBI and Homeland Security investigators piece together what unfolded.
But the incident quickly became another flashpoint in New York City’s ongoing fight over immigration enforcement.
Scenes showed armed federal agents struggling to hold back angry anti-ICE protesters who flooded the area. By evening, protesters had also gathered outside the hospital where the suspect was recovering.
Far-left Democratic Mayor Zohran Mamdani seized on the shooting to renew his demand to abolish ICE, even as federal officials identified the injured man as an illegal immigrant with suspected ties to a violent gang and a lengthy criminal history.
In a statement Thursday evening, Mamdani called the shooting “unconscionable” and said early reports indicated that federal officers surrounded the suspect’s vehicle with a child inside, before firing.
The mayor said he had already called President Donald Trump and planned to demand an end to all ICE enforcement operations in New York City.
“I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities,” Mamdani declared.
He also expressed concern for the injured, known violent illegal alien and his family, saying he was praying for the man’s recovery.
Mamdani ended his statement with a series of demands to remove ICE from neighborhoods, hospitals, and streets before issuing his final call: “Abolish ICE.”
The mayor’s position was hardly new. Mamdani is well-known for calling for the abolition of the federal immigration enforcement agency and has defended New York City’s sanctuary policies that protect illegal aliens who break the law.
DHS pushed back against New York’s sanctuary policies, arguing that local officials’ refusal to cooperate with federal immigration authorities forces ICE officers to make arrests in public, where encounters can become unpredictable.
“When dangerous illegal aliens are released back onto the streets by radical sanctuary politicians, our officers are forced to make arrests at large in the community in unpredictable and dangerous environments,” the department said.
“Our officers should not have to risk their lives, and innocent Americans should not have to face unnecessary danger, because sanctuary politicians refuse to cooperate with federal law enforcement,” DHS added.
Other New York Democrats — known for singing from the same songbook as Mamdani — also weighing in.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-NY), and Governor Kathy Hochul (D-NY) called for investigations into the shooting.
Hochul said New Yorkers deserved a full explanation of what happened and why federal officers opened fire.
