Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) said in April that she would welcome any and all investigations into her personal history — and on Monday morning, federal agents gave her exactly what she asked for.

The investigation escalated with an early morning raid on her home — which Omar immediately characterized as a political hit job and further proof that President Donald Trump was “weaponizing” federal law enforcement. According to Fox News, the investigation centers on immigration documents completed by the congresswoman’s late father.
Omar, who was born the youngest of seven children in Mogadishu in 1982, lost her mother at the age of two and fled civil war in her home country of Somalia at the age of nine. She then lived for four years in a refugee camp in Kenya before coming to the United States with her father in 1995. She became a citizen five years later, in 2000, when she was 17.
The Minnesota congresswoman has been married three times — and it’s the second of those marriages that has raised red flags for federal law enforcement, as numerous reports have not only identified her second husband as likely her biological brother, but have alleged that the timelines of her first two marriages overlap considerably.
Omar first wed Ahmed Hirsi (AKA Ahmed Aden) in a Muslim ceremony in 2002. She applied for a legal marriage license at the time as well, according to the Center for Immigration Studies, but did not go through with a legal wedding. Omar and Hirsi had two children together before separating in 2008. Because they were not legally married, they did not need a civil divorce.
One year later, Omar married Ahmed Elmi — a citizen of the United Kingdom who referred to himself as a “dirty dandy.” Although many reports suggested that he was her biological brother — and that the marriage was an end run around the United States immigration —official birth certificates were never obtained because many records were destroyed while Somalia was engulfed in civil war.
Omar reportedly divorced Elmi in a religious ceremony only — meaning that legally they were still married when she reunited with Hirsi in 2012 and they had a third child together. In 2017, Omar and Elmi were legally divorced, and in 2018 she legally married Hirsi.
One year later, in 2019, Omar officially divorced Hirsi. Several months later, she married political consultant Tim Mynett, who had worked on her campaign before they married.
But Omar’s marriage history, as complicated as it is, is far more likely to cause her a public relations headache than a legal one. The New York Post reported that even if it were proved that Omar had been involved in a sham marriage to help Elmi secure a green card, the likely result would be the State Department barring Elmi from returning to the United States.
According to reports on Monday’s search, investigators are examining the original documents Omar’s father filed when the family first came to the United States in 1995.
“If there’s enough evidence that she or [her father] lied on her immigration application to become a United States citizen, whether it was one time or several times, the Trump administration could initiate a denaturalization process that would strip her of her citizenship,” a top immigration official told The Post.
Omar’s father, Nur Omar Mohamed, served as a colonel in the Somali Army under socialist dictator Siad Barre. In the late 1970s, he is documented to have served during the Ogaden War — and while soldiers and officials on both sides of that conflict have been accused of committing war crimes and abuse, Omar’s father has never been personally linked to those accusations.
Barre, a top general in the Somali military, had seized power in 1969 and implemented “scientific socialism.” Between 1987 and 1989, Barre led a genocidal campaign against the Isaaq clan — the Hargeisa Holocaust — that was meant to depopulate Somaliland. In addition to building minefields in civilian areas and indiscriminately bombing villages, Barre’s forces poisoned wells, strafed fleeing civilians, and used rape as a weapon of war.
The exact date that Omar’s father left Somali military service is unclear, but some reports indicate that his service ended with the fall of Barre’s regime in 1991.
If he left out his service—or any other relevant information—when he filled out immigration papers for himself and his family, that could immediately raise questions about the validity of Omar’s citizenship.
