- Democrats repeatedly said that affordability was their top priority heading into midterms.
- Their base cares more about stopping Trump than advancing policy goals.
- Democrats may preach affordability, but their real goal is lawfare.
During and after the most recent edition of the “most important election of our lifetimes,” it is important to take stock of what is really on the ballot. What issues are animating voters, and what are the candidates going to deliver if they win?
Ask any Democrat running for office at the federal, state, or local level, and they will say affordability is their top priority. From aspiring senators to incumbent dogcatchers, Democrats have honed in on cost-of-living messaging as their pathway to victory.
Independent voters have consistently ranked affordability issues as their number one concern heading into the midterms, so it makes sense that Democrats looking to appeal to independents would lean into such messaging.
While independent voters often sway elections, a party’s real priorities—as opposed to its messaging—come from the opinions of its base.
Among those intending to vote for a Democratic candidate for Congress, when asked whether their primary reason was to help Democrats to achieve their goals, an outright majority (54%) said that their reason for voting was mainly to stop President Donald Trump and the Republicans from achieving policy goals. This hardly sounds like an endorsement of any Democratic plans to champion affordability.
As has been the case for the past decade and counting, Democrats care about stopping President Trump’s agenda more than anything else. As much as Democrats might try to claim otherwise, affordability is not on the ballot. Lawfare is. Democrats have shown that when they have power, they will use it to prosecute their political opponents—President Trump chief among them.
However, lawfare did not begin, nor will it end, with President Trump.
Lest we forget, the Obama-era IRS subjected conservative nonprofits to intense scrutiny, delaying applications for tax-exempt status while demanding private donor and volunteer information.
More recently, the Arctic Frost investigation targeted more than 160 people in President Trump’s circle, including many who were never accused of crimes. Conservative groups like Turning Point USA and The Conservative Partnership Institute came under scrutiny.
Such lawfare will likely begin anew should Democrats reclaim power. As Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., recently said, she hopes that legal attacks against those who “enabled” President Trump will send a “deterrence message” to young people considering entering conservative politics.
If Democrats win a majority in either chamber of Congress, they will be beholden to their base, not to the frustrated independents who care about affordability.
Now more than ever, Americans must understand the stakes. Whether this election is the most important of our lives can be debated by the talking heads. But one thing is perfectly clear: If the Democrats gain power, they will be driven to do all they can to stop President Trump.
Messaging on affordability will disappear after the election and will be replaced by wall-to-wall news coverage of the Trump Derangement Syndrome. All the while, the ascendant socialists in the Democratic Party will be given more control over party policy.
Contrast this vision with what the Trump administration has accomplished in the last two years. The border is secure, welfare fraudsters are being aggressively prosecuted, and the number of federal bureaucrats has shrunk to the lowest level in decades.
The Democrats’ plan to “stop President Trump” includes halting and reversing all those wins. Democrats may preach affordability on election night, but the American people will wake up to lawfare the morning after.
