The $30 million plan sends $6.4 million to Partners Against the Hate, a city initiative that distributes grants to community groups.
While the plan was supposed to help Jewish New Yorkers, who are the victims of 53% of New York City hate crimes according to the NYPD, the initiative’s partner institutions include the Arab American Association of New York, which has given more than $223,000 to the New York City chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Fox News reported.
Since 2021, the association has funneled $223,000 to CAIR, which has significant ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) have designated CAIR a terrorist organization, and certain chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood have federal designation as a foreign terrorist organization. Linda Sarsour, a City University of New York alum and former Women’s March co-chair, also served as the association’s executive director. Many of these groups have overlapping ties with the Muslim Brotherhood, and Sarsour herself is embedded in controversy.
Even if Mamdani devoted the entirety of the $30 million plan to cover security for Jewish institutions, it would fall vastly short of what the community spends privately on security. In 2025, Jewish communal organizations spent over $1 billion on security across the United States, according to the Jewish Federations of North America.
The plan, meant to target antisemitism, provides no definition of antisemitism and comes at a time when the mayor is struggling to rally Jewish support in a city that is roughly 10% Jewish.
A coalition of more than 25 Jewish organizations found the lack of a definition problematic. The plan “[largely sidesteps] the biggest threat Jewish New Yorkers are dealing with today: anti-Jewish exclusion and violence cloaked as anti-Israel activism,” the groups said in a letter, according to The New York Times.
Mamdani’s wife, Rama Duwaji, has participated in these types of actions, liking Instagram posts celebrating the October 7 massacres, a Jewish Insider report found. Duwaji also liked posts from the People’s Forum, a Chinese Communist Party-linked group, promoting marches supporting the Hamas attacks. The People’s Forum, along with the Democratic Socialists of America, organized the marches held one day after the attack. The mayor has previously distanced himself from his wife’s social media activity.
The funding controversy comes at a time when many Democrat officials struggle to control larger trends of extremism within the democratic socialist wing of the party. Leftists have started to yell at Mamdani for being insufficiently anti-Israel.
Mamdani has not responded to questions about the antisemitism plan’s funding of Muslim Brotherhood-linked groups.
