Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel urged her fellow Jewish Democrats Sunday to place the “needs of the world” above “our own self-interest,” arguing that Jews may need to “sacrifice” even “the very future of our own people” for the sake of humanity.

She cited the example of the Persian Queen Esther, who risked her life to save the Jewish people when they faced the threat of extinction in the Persian Empire.

“It is perhaps up to us now to follow in her path and sacrifice the comfort, safety and security and even the very future of our own people in exchange for the opportunity to save the rest of humanity,” Nessel said, according to a video of remarks obtained by the Detroit News.

The Michigan AG said Jewish Democrats have a “moral imperative to place the needs of the world above even our own self-interest.”

“It’s so easy to hate people right now, especially other Democrats who seem to have thrown us under the bus, despite our lifelong contributions to our party,” Nessel argued. While many Jewish Democrats feel they “must choose between our faith and our party,” she urged them to stick with Democrats.

“What good is defending the historic homeland of our ancestors and demanding that candidates acknowledge its right to exist if the planet upon which it rests is no longer inhabitable?” Nessel argued. “The Republican Party would have you believe that the biggest issue our nation faces is transgender girls playing JV volleyball.”

Nessel’s remarks came the day after her party’s nominating convention, which she did not attend. The attorney general cited safety concerns amid heated opposition to Israel among Democrats—an opposition that critics say verges on antisemitism.

“I don’t feel safe going,” Nessel reportedly said. “I feel like my presence isn’t going to be welcome. I don’t want to get chased around. I don’t want to get harassed. I don’t want to get yelled and screamed at. I don’t want to get booed off the stage, irrespective of what I’m saying.”

In June, anti-Israel activists shouted at California state Sen. Scott Weiner, who is Jewish, for failing to condemn Israel. Weiner, a staunch advocate for transgender activism, had been attending a transgender rally, and critics praised his stance on those issues even as they shouted at him over Israel.

Abdul El-Sayed, the Democrat nominee for U.S. Senate in Michigan, also attended the event for Jewish Democrats Sunday.

El-Sayed apologized to Jewish Democrats for a statement he released in March after the attack on Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield. In that statement, El-Sayed condemned the attack but added, “hurt people hurt people.”

“I am asking for forgiveness and a moment of grace,” El-Sayed said at the Jewish Caucus gathering. “I made a mistake.”

Nessel has not endorsed El-Sayed, a Muslim Democrat who opposes U.S. military aid to Israel. Nessel has served as the state’s attorney general since 2019. She cannot run for reelection due to term limits.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
