A flustered El-Sayed attempted to write off past social media posts from his half-sister claiming their mother and family had “long” been active in the radical group. The questions from NBC came after El-Sayed denied any connection to the Muslim Brotherhood before his sister’s social media posts emerged.
NBC reporter Tom Llamas asked El-Sayed to explain posts made by his half-sister Eman Abdelhadi in June 2012 when she wrote, “My family has long been MB,” and another one where she said, “had an amazing talk with my mom about her activism in the Muslim Brotherhood during the early 70s while she was in college.” In another post from July 2013 Abdelhadi wrote, “I have had family jailed for being a part of it.”
In response, El-Sayed dismissed the question and began by listing his past work in Michigan.
“It’s funny to me. I was born in 1984, down the street in Rochester Hills,” he said. “I was raised here in Michigan, went to the University of Michigan, rebuilt the health department in the city, led the health department in this county. And you want to ask me about what was happening in Egypt in 1970? Are you serious?”
When pushed to directly answer, El-Sayed said he never discussed the issue with his mother.
“I’m telling you, like, I have no ties. We have no ties,” he said. “I have never had these conversations with my mother. I wasn’t raised by my mother.” El-Sayed then accused Llamas of “using hearsay evidence from a tweet.”
Llamas pushed back on El-Sayed, noting that he has been critical of President Donald Trump over “truthfulness.” “So when people ask you a question, they all do expect the truth,” the reporter said.
“Do you think, are you insinuating that somehow I was lying?” El-Sayed responded. “And I’m telling you I was not.”
Chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood, including in Egypt where El-Sayed’s parents emigrated from, have been designated as specially designated global terror organizations by the United States. El-Sayed once boasted that he had dual American and Egyptian citizenship, but now says that claim was misinformed.
The posts from Abdelhadi, a University of Chicago professor and El-Sayed’s maternal half-sister, were resurfaced by the Washington Free Beacon after El-Sayed categorically denied having any links to the Muslim Brotherhood in an interview with “Meet the Press.”
President Donald Trump weighed in on the issue on Wednesday, claiming that El-Sayed was a “member” himself of the Muslim Brotherhood.
“Abdul, or as I call him Muhammad El-Sayad, he’s a member of the Muslim Brotherhood,” Trump said. “You can’t have a member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Congress, being on one of our security committees.”
