A longtime strategist for former President Barack Obama is already looking forward to 2028, saying that he’s spoken to 29 Democrats who are at least toying with the idea of running for president in the next election cycle.

Jim Messina, who managed Obama’s 2012 presidential campaign, laid out his thoughts during an Election Day appearance on Bloomberg TV, where he said that the Democrats’ Tuesday blowout — particularly with regard to the gubernatorial elections in key swing states — changed the presidential map going in to the 2028 cycle.
“If we win the House and the Senate, we will have won it because of rural, more red districts, and so that’s the most important thing,” Messina explained as the votes were still coming in on Tuesday. “I just met with my 29th person who’s thinking about running for President of the United States — 29, just on the Democratic side — so everyone’s kicking tires.”
“When you talk about the map, you’re talking about Texas, you’re talking about Arizona, a state where Barack Obama didn’t compete either time. Georgia, we didn’t compete there either time, North Carolina is now moving blue,” Messina continued. “The map is just much better if we win some of these.”
Democrats did, of course, go on to win many of the races he’d mentioned and then some on Tuesday — but the wide range of candidates who racked up wins in the D column still leaves questions as to which faction of the Democrat Party would have the momentum to run a national campaign.
“We’re going to spend a year fighting out who actually has the mandate — left/center/populist — and then in 2028 we’ll have our answer,” Democrat strategist Lauren Hitt told Axios.
Democrats saw big wins from relative moderates like Governor Josh Shapiro (D-PA) — who coasted to re-election with a 22-point margin — as well as from card-carrying members of the Democratic Socialists of America, and every possible stripe in between.
And thus far, the potential candidates for 2028 appear to cover that same wide swath — from Shapiro to Democrat socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and from outgoing Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) to former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Messina did not reveal the names of any of the potential candidates who had spoken to him.
