This update comes days after an attempted prank between the employee, later identified as Walt Z from Michigan, and two unidentified individuals. Walt was stocking freezer shelves in uniform when one of the pranksters asked him the time. When Walt took out his smartphone, the person pretended to steal money by scanning it with his own phone while playing a pre-recorded Apple Pay sound.
The attempted prank set off an impassioned rant from Walt that has captured the hearts of hardworking people across the nation, who rallied around this father of four who was simply trying to do his job.
“My life is hard enough as it is, okay? I don’t need this crap,” Walt says in the video.
“Bro, bro, it’s just a joke! It’s just a prank,” the person filming replies.
“I got kids at home that went to bed without me right now! I was supposed to be off an hour ago! I gotta wake up at 5 in the morning and do 10 more stores!” Walt says, becoming emotional.
“I’m sorry, bro, chill. We’re just filming a video; it was just a joke,” the person replies as Walt cuts him off and steps forward.
“No, you don’t! You’re probably making money off of this! I can’t even pay my goddamn mortgage! And I got four kids at home! So not funny!” Walt can be heard shouting.
The pranksters originally uploaded the video to Instagram, but the account was deactivated after the video went viral across multiple social media platforms. The comments were overwhelmingly supportive of Walt, who has come to represent the average working American.
“This guy is literally the living representation of the last generation of American men that will ever be men. Working in the terrible American economy, raising a big family, standing up for his responsibilities is courageous. He is the last man standing,” one X user wrote.
“Praying for this man and his family. Being an honest, and hard working American in 2026 is a humiliation ritual,” another agreed.
A GoFundMe was started for Walt, and as of Friday morning it has collected nearly $500,000.
“Walt Z out of Michigan sends a heartfelt thank you, and is absolutely blown away by how much people have cared over this,” fundraiser organizer Luke Oakenshield wrote Wednesday, adding that the Red Baron employee is not sharing his full name to maintain his privacy.
A spokesperson for Red Baron’s parent company told the New York Post in a statement that the company has “connected directly with our team member to check on his well-being, and we continue to offer our full support.”
“We are pleased to share that he is doing well and remains a valued member of our team,” the statement said.
