As the top campaigner for House Republicans, Johnson has raised hundreds of millions through the super PAC. The Congressional Leadership Fund will redistribute the $10 million across 16 new districts and end support for two incumbents.
“For two years, we’ve built the resources and infrastructure that allow us to maneuver in a difficult environment,” Chris Winkelman, the president of the Congressional Leadership Fund, said in a statement to The New York Times.
“These moves keep the pressure on the most vulnerable Democrats and preserve a path to 218 seats,” he continued.
The first two districts to lose funding, first reported by The New York Times, include two incumbents in close races: Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, R-Iowa, who is running against Democrat Christina Bohannan, and Rep. Tom Kean Jr., R-N.J., who is running against Democrat Rebecca Bennett.
“Our campaign has the resources to win, and Mariannette Miller-Meeks has the record to run on,” a spokesperson for Miller-Meeks for Congress told the Daily Signal.
“Christina Bohannan has New York billionaires and national Democrats who know she’ll vote with them every time. They spent millions against Mariannette in 2024, and it didn’t work then. It won’t work now, and on Nov. 3 she’ll beat Christina Bohannan a third time,” the spokesperson continued.
It is unclear whether Miller-Meeks for Congress was given a heads-up about the change in spending. Johnson recently appeared at a campaign event for Miller-Meeks in Iowa.
The Congressional Leadership Fund also pulled campaign spending in two districts Republicans are trying to flip in Michigan and Ohio. Republican Thomas J. Smith is trying to unseat Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet, D-Mich., and Republican Eric Conroy is challenging Rep. Greg Landsman, D-Ohio.
Some of the redistributed funds will go to sitting Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Monica De La Cruz of Texas, Bryan Steil of Wisconsin, Rob Wittman of Virginia, and Bill Huizenga of Michigan.
The Congressional Leadership Fund did not respond to the Daily Signal’s request for comment.
