8:55 p.m.—Socialists are expected to expand their bloc in Congress. DSA-endorsed candidates Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Melat Kiros, Darializa Chevalier, and Claire Valdez are running in seats rated “Solid D” by Cook Political Report, while Pennsylvania’s Chris Rabb, Michigan’s Donavan McKinney and Rashida Tlaib are already projected to win.
None of the five likely incoming members has committed to supporting House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for speaker, MS Now reported. “I am nobody’s rubber stamp,” Rabb said. Chevalier and Kiros told Politico they might use the vote to secure socialist concessions.
8:17 p.m.—Three DSA-endorsed candidates will win their races for the House of Representatives, Decision Desk projects.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., will retain her seat, Decision Desk projects. Chris Rabb will win in Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District, and Donavan McKinney will win in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District.
8:03 p.m.—Ashley Moody will win the Florida Senate race against DSA member Angie Nixon, Decision Desk projects. Nixon joined the DSA earlier this year, before winning the Democrat primary. Perhaps sensing Nixon’s weakness, the DSA did not endorse her.
7:30 p.m.—The Democratic Socialists are celebrating the win of DSA-endorsed Robert LeVertis Bell, who ran uncontested in Kentucky’s State House District 43.
7:07 p.m.—Early returns are in from Florida, where Republican Ashley Moody leads state Rep. Angie Nixon, a DSA member, in the Senate race. Polls have closed in Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, Vermont, and Virginia.
6:28 p.m.—Many of the DSA’s most notable wins so far were decided in Democrat primaries in safely Democrat districts. Melat Kiros in Colorado’s 1st Congressional District and Darializa Avila Chevalier in New York’s 13th Congressional District unseated established Democrats and are likely to prevail in the general election.
Other DSA-endorsed House candidates in races rated “Solid D” by Cook Political Report include Donavan McKinney in Michigan, Claire Valdez in New York, and Chris Rabb in Pennsylvania.
Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., are also likely to win reelection in safe districts.
6:00 p.m.—Polls are about to close in the first races of the night.
The first race to watch is the Florida Senate race (polls close at 7), where Republican Ashley Moody is expected to prevail over Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon, a DSA member but not endorsed by the DSA.
The DSA has endorsed two ballot measures in Virginia, where polls will also close at 7. The socialists backed Virginia Question 2, redefining marriage to include same-sex couples, and VA Question 3, restoring the voting rights of felons.
This liveblog will cover races like the Michigan Senate election, where Democrat Abdul El-Sayed is not a DSA member or endorsed by the DSA, though he has a history of speaking at DSA rallies.
