DEY. Ideas + Influence, which represents several leading AI safety figures, was working to book interviews for the 27-year-old researcher after he left his job and warned publicly that AI could lead to the apocalypse, Pirate Wires reported.
The report raises questions about the coordination behind Coxon’s media rollout, after Coxon told Fox News host Bret Baier “not at all” when asked whether his media appearances had been arranged with outside help.
According to sources cited in the report, DEY. was pitching Coxon to outlets for a September 9 interview around the same time it was booking media appearances for Nate Soares, president of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI). Neither Coxon nor DEY. immediately responded to requests for comment.
The British-born Coxon, who spent time in London’s “rationalist” scene before working at OpenAI and then Anthropic, became a national figure on September 8 with a Wall Street Journal interview. He followed it with a viral X thread claiming AI labs are “racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.”
Despite having fewer than 100 followers on X when he posted the thread, it drew roughly 174 million views, amplified in part by prominent AI safety accounts.
The speed of the Coxon’s fame drew scrutiny from tech figures including Elon Musk, who questioned how someone who had worked at Anthropic for only a few months landed a Wall Street Journal profile and network television appearances so quickly.
DEY. describes itself as a firm for “artists, scientists, dissidents, and dreamers,” but its client list includes several of the most prominent figures in AI safety advocacy. The firm represents Eliezer Yudkowsky, who co-authored a book arguing that advanced AI poses a risk of human extinction, and Timnit Gebru, the former Google researcher who left the company following an internal dispute over her research.
Its client list also includes Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered AI, along with organizations such as George Soros’s Open Society Foundations, the Ford Foundation, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The report raises questions about how professional communications firms are shaping the public debate over AI risk while legislators in Washington consider regulating AI.
