The State Where A WNBA Cheap Shot Could Get You Charged With Assault

A state attorney general warned WNBA players to cut down on the blatant flagrant fouls against Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham if they want to stay out of legal trouble.

Florida’s attorney general James Uthmeier took to social media to deliver his assessment of the situation after Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington was ejected from Saturday’s game over a flagrant foul against Cunningham.

Uthmeier doubled down on his threats of legal action against players while increasing the charge in another post on Sunday.

The play — and Uthmeier’s reaction — came in the wake of numerous protests over Cunningham speaking up about trans-identifying men infiltrating women’s sports. Her assertion — that women and girls should have space to play without the threat of biological men invading their teams and their locker rooms — quickly created major news across the association, sparking backlash from leftist media outlets, other players, and coaches.

Since her initial remarks, Cunningham has stood her ground on her opinion that caused rallies for and against the Fever guard, as well as a series of ensuing incidents. In one instance, the co-owner of the Seattle Storm confronted two teenage girls sitting courtside with signs and shirts supporting Cunningham.

The Sky guard did not stop attacking Cunningham despite being ejected from the game over the weekend. From the locker room, Carrington posted on Threads “WHITE PRIVILEGE” — and later posted on X “8/23” with a smiling face, marking the date of the Sky and Fever’s next game.

After being informed about Carrington’s comment, Cunningham referenced a similar foul that had gotten her thrown out of a game in the last season — and said that she’d “deserved it” at the time. “There’s no reason to play that card,” she added, saying that the official’s call had not had anything to do with race.

Prior to the 2020 season, the WNBA had not played a game in the state of Florida in 18 years. They played a limited “neutral site” season in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, but have not played a regular season game in the Sunshine State since. Any players with plans to replicate Carrington’s aggressive foul against Cunningham may now be hoping that pattern holds.
