The World Is About To Get The ‘Inside Story’ Of Israel’s Wild Pager Attack On Hezbollah

The years-long intelligence operation that simultaneously exploded thousands of pagers in the pockets of Hezbollah terrorists is getting a tell-all, featuring firsthand accounts from both Benjamin Netanyahu and the head of Israel’s Mossad spy agency.

Netanyahu is among several high-profile figures featured in “Paging Hezbollah,” a new documentary from director Justin Folk that dropped its first teaser on Thursday morning. The director behind hit Daily Wire documentaries “Am I Racist?” and “What Is a Woman?” says his new film gets to answer the question everyone was thinking after Israel took credit for the attack that hit thousands of terrorists: “How did they pull that off?”

“I’m thrilled that our team gets to answer that question,” Folk told The Daily Wire. “The Israeli pager operation was as imaginative as it was improbable. This is the inside story told by the people directly involved, and the story is more fascinating than one could imagine.”

“It’s rare to be able to do a film about a historical spy operation with this level of access,” Folk said.

The trailer showcases Netanyahu, who has said little on the attack beyond confirming that it was indeed Israel behind it. In the trailer, he refers to the pagers as a “handful of TNT [that] changed the world.”  

TAKE A FIRST LOOK AT “PAGING HEZBOLLAH”

The September 2024 operation centered on pagers used by Hezbollah members, with the devices detonating across Lebanon and Syria. The attack was followed the next day by explosions involving Hezbollah’s handheld radios. 

The operation left 42 dead and another 4,000 injured, according to a Lebanese minister who is also part of Hezbollah. Victims suffered the loss of fingers, hands, eyes, and injuries from shrapnel. 

The operation has since become one of the most closely watched examples of intelligence and supply-chain infiltration in modern warfare. Little, however, is known about the behind-the-scenes work that went into building the pagers, how they were placed with Hezbollah, and how Israel decided to use them. 

The filmmakers behind “Paging Hezbollah” say the film will lay out how Israel was able to penetrate Hezbollah’s communications network by engineering the devices, infiltrating the supply chain, and ultimately convincing Hezbollah to adopt technology it believed was secure.

The film calls the pager operation a culmination of years of planning and deception rather than a single strike conceived and executed overnight. The documentary’s synopsis says it will examine how the devices at the center of the operation were “engineered, marketed, and smuggled in before anyone knew what it was.” The film will trace the operation from its origins through its eventual activation.

Beyond Netanyahu, the film also features rare interviews with then-head of Mossad, David Barnea, and the former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, David Petraeus, who calls the operation a “modern-day Trojan horse.” 

Other interviews in the film include former Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren, former U.S. intelligence official Matthew Levitt, former head of Israel’s National Security Council General Jacob Nagel, and former Israeli intelligence official Sarit Zehavi.

The trailer presents the operation as a potential turning point in the conflict, with interviewees discussing the strategic significance of striking Hezbollah’s communications network.

The documentary promises to go beyond the widely reported explosions and examine the intelligence operation that made them possible.

“Many people heard about the pager operation and wondered how it was even possible,” Folk explains. “We wanted to tell the actual inside story — years of patience, engineering, deception, and tradecraft that seem more like fiction than fact.”

“We aimed to make the film of record for the operation, so we went right to the source,” Folk said. “The deeper we went, the more incredible the real story became.”

The film is set to hit theaters on October 30.
