Jeffries, who is set to take over as Speaker of the House in January, called Miller’s promotion after Tuesday’s midterm elections “an awful choice.”
The Democrat leader told Jonathan Karl on ABC’s “This Week” that Miller’s arrival rules out any potential cooperation with the Trump administration due to his “extremism.”
“There’s not going to be any opportunity, certainly, to work with Stephen Miller and what he represents,” Jeffries said. “And we’re committed to forcefully pushing back against the extremism that they may try to continue to unleash on the American people.”
Miller is replacing Trump’s former Chief of Staff, Susie Wiles, whom Jeffries said he communicated with frequently. That line of contact will not carry over, he told ABC.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries calls President Trump appointing Stephen Miller as his new chief of staff an “irresponsible decision.”
“There’s not going to be any opportunity to work with Stephen Miller and what he represents. We’re committed to forcefully pushing back against the extremism that they may try to continue to unleash on the American people,” he tells ABC News’ @JonKarl.

Jeffries said Democrats have “a firewall in the House and a firewall in the Senate, thanks to the American people,” which he cited to justify his vow to shut out Miller.
The Democrat leader also blamed Miller — previously Trump’s top advisor on immigration — for the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good, two protesters killed by federal agents in Minneapolis last January.
“Stephen Miller is the architect of Donald Trump’s violent mass deportation machine,” Jeffries said. “[Miller] has unleashed billions of taxpayer dollars to brutalize and kill American citizens like Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good, and at the same period of time to violently target law-abiding immigrant families and communities all across the country.”
In January, at an anti-ICE protest in Minneapolis, Renee Good used her vehicle to impede immigration officers, and as several officers approached her vehicle and requested she exit, she drove her car forward, hitting one of the officers before he shot her, The Daily Wire previously reported. Eleven days later, Alex Pretti was shot and killed during an altercation with Border Patrol agents after he was tackled to the ground with a gun. The White House said federal authorities acted in self-defense in both instances.
Jeffries set his sights on Miller immediately after Trump announced his promotion to chief of staff.
“Stephen Miller is a dangerous xenophobe and reckless extremist who has American blood on his hands,” Jeffries wrote on X. “His presence in government should be eradicated like a malignant tumor. Fire him today.”
Earlier this year, after Jeffries called Miller a “hateful bigot,” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said Jeffries “is a buffoon,” adding that “no one should take anything he says seriously.”
