“They didn’t like the candidates, and some of the candidates that I endorsed fought me, and they didn’t like it,” he said in a late night Fox Business interview. “This MAGA base is incredible, the most loyal base, the most loyal people, the people that built America.”
Democrats retook control of both the House and the Senate. As of 6 a.m. Eastern, Senate Democrats will hold 54 seats, the Republicans 44, with races in Alaska and Mississippi still to be decided. In House, Democrats have won 228 seats to the Republicans’ 139, with 68 races still to be called. Only 218 seats are needed for a majority.
He acknowledged that the unpopularity of the Iran War played a role, saying, “I think a part of it was Iran.”
“People agree with what I’m doing on Iran, but they really probably weren’t willing to do the short-term consequence of playing anything more for gasoline,” he said.
He said he hasn’t finished the job in Iran: “Maybe I will, maybe I won’t.”
Despite dedicated significant time to campaigning for Republicans in midterms, Trump posted on Truth Social Tuesday night to distance himself from the results.
“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” he said. “Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
During his 32-day midterm blitz, Trump repeatedly asked voters to “pretend I’m on the ballot.”
Trump said he “shouldn’t feel guilty” because the sitting president almost never wins the midterms.
Trump said he was “a little bit surprised” that Republicans didn’t do better.
“I thought they’d do better,” he said. “We had tremendous rallies. We had about 30 of them. There were thousands and thousands of people outside, let alone inside, couldn’t get in, and it. And they’d watch from big screens on the outside of the buildings, and they were excited. It was great excitement. So I’m a little bit surprised. I thought that I could transfer those people into candidates.”
Trump said he was particularly disappointed that Darline Graham did not win reelection to her deceased brother’s seat.
“She’s essentially mourning and campaigning at the same time, and then on top of it, this happens,’ he said.
Graham lost to Democrat Dr. Annie Andrews by four points. This marks the first time a Democrat has been elected senator in South Carolina since 1998.
Trump said the Democrats did a “good job” with the midterm campaigns.
“They fought hard,” he said. “They were, you know, they’ve been fighting for a long time. They’ve been fighting me for a long time. This fight’s been going on for ages.”
He vowed to use the power of veto to combat the massive Democrat majorities.
“It’s been done before, as you know, numerous times. It’s the power of veto. It’s one of the stronger powers that a president has,” he said. “They’ll send over things that are insane, and I’ll veto them.”
Trump said he can work with Democrats on “everything.”
“Now, could I work with them on an open border? I don’t think so. Could I work with them on certain other things? Could I work with them on men playing on, you know, in women’s sports? No, I don’t think so,” he said. “I mean, I don’t think men should be playing. I view that as an issue. I don’t think I could work with them on, but I could work with on many, many things. Could I work with them on transgender mutalization of children? No, I don’t think so. But I can work with them on many things.”
