WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced Thursday that the United States will not live-stream the execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan.

The decision came after days of speculation on whether the administration would follow through on Secretary of War Pete Hegseth’s announcement that the execution would be live-streamed. Trump said that though he thought a live-streamed execution would be a good deterrent, he decided against it.

“I think streaming the execution for all to see might have been a strong deterrent for the World to witness how America deals with Terrorists and SCUM like Hasan but, many very good and well meaning people would rather not watch him die, through streaming, or through any other visual device,” Trump said in a Truth Social post on Thursday.

“He will die, as scheduled, by firing squad, but this event will not be streamed,” the president shared. “That said, the execution may be viewed in person by the immediate families of the victims, if they so choose. They deserve to witness JUSTICE!”

Trump also hit former President Barack Obama, who was president when Hasan opened fire and killed 13 people and injured 32 more in 2009.

“Nidal Malik Hasan, a former U.S. Army Major turned traitor, is a very bad and evil man, who killed 13 people, including a pregnant soldier, who died, along with her unborn son, and injured, very seriously, 32 more innocent people,” Trump said.

“Barack Hussein Obama’s Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) intercepted electronic communications between Hasan and the radical Yemeni-American cleric, Anwar al-Awlaki,” Trump added. “When reviewed by his FBI terrorism task force, investigators concluded that Hasan’s emails were not a threat. This assessment of the Obama Administration’s actions was later considered to be a key intelligence failure.”

The president’s announcement comes after Catholic leaders condemned both the planned execution and live-stream, with Archbishop Timothy Broglio, who leads the Archdiocese for the Military Services, calling for Catholics assigned to the firing squad to request that they be excused. The Pentagon declined to comment on the topic when asked this week by The Daily Wire.

“There’s a good reason why the U.S. military has not executed a prisoner since 1961,” Bishop Joseph Coffey, who serves as auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, told The Daily Wire on Monday. “It’s barbaric. I’m hoping and praying that [Secretary Hegseth] and President Trump change their minds and do not go through with this.”

On Friday, Vice President JD Vance was asked by a reporter how he viewed the planned public execution as a Catholic. Vance said he would not watch a live-stream and questioned whether the broadcast would happen.

“But what I try to remind people is, look, this is a guy who committed, in my view, the worst terrorist attack on American soil outside of 9/11, the people that he was meant to treat, the Army soldiers that he was meant to treat for mental illness and other problems, he took them at their most vulnerable and gunned down these people where they lived,” Vance said.

“So whatever the controversy is about the method of the execution, I hope that people don’t forget that this is a guy who brutally murdered a lot of innocent people,” the vice president added.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
