“I think she’s a terrible person, I think she’s a terrible congresswoman, I don’t think she loves our country at all, but I don’t take a position,” Trump told reporters before departing for a rally in Alaska.
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) raided Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence Monday morning as part of an investigation into immigration documents completed by her late father when she was a child, Fox News reported.
The Justice Department said agents executed a court-authorized search warrant.
Omar came to the United States as a child refugee from Somalia in 1995 before obtaining her American citizenship in 2000.
Following Monday’s raid, Omar posted on X that she was “targeted” by the Trump administration for political reasons.
“I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation,” Omar wrote in an X post.
“I will not be silenced,” she added.
Vice President JD Vance later said that he and the president try “to stay out” of Justice Department probes.
“I did not have advance notice her home was being raided,” Vance said. “I never — we try to run our Department of Justice in a fair and honest way. We try to let the law follow the facts rather than creating facts just to prosecute people we don’t like.”
“And because of that, I think the president and I largely try to stay out of Department of Justice investigations and other prosecutions. Now, I do know that there are some serious allegations against Ilhan Omar. We’re going to look into those, and again, if there is a real case there, we’re gonna follow the facts. If there’s not a real case there, then we won’t,” he added.
Omar’s marital history has also drawn scrutiny. In 2009, she married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen some critics claim is her biological brother. The couple reportedly split in 2011 before finalizing their divorce in 2017.
Trump previously called for Omar to be sent out of the country.
After February’s State of the Union address, Trump wrote on Truth Social that Omar and her fellow far-left congressional colleague Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) to be “institutionalized” and sent back to “where they came from.” The two congresswomen shouted at the president as he scolded them for not standing in support of his opposition to illegal immigration.
“We should send them back from where they came — as fast as possible,” Trump said.
Last year, Trump said that he “met with the head of Somalia” and asked him “to take her back.”
“He said I don’t want her,” Trump appeared to joke.
