President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Democrats have “some very formidable, talented people” who could run for president in 2028, but declined to name them because he did not want to raise their profiles.

Speaking with Fox News hosts Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum the day after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress, Trump said some potential contenders were being overlooked.
“I’d rather not say because I actually know some that I think would be formidable, but I don’t want to put them in play,” Trump said. “People aren’t even thinking about them.”
Trump also discussed the future of the Republican Party, which will have to select a successor to the term-limited president in 2028. Asked whether he wanted Republicans to hold an open primary, Trump said he expected the process to be “somewhat of that.”
“They say ‘whoever Trump endorses is gonna win,’ or ‘whoever Trump picks is gonna win,’” Trump said. “I don’t know if that’s true or not.”
Trump pointed to Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and other unnamed figures as potential Republican candidates.
“We have a great bench,” Trump said. “We have a great group of talented people that I think would do a very good job.”
Vance has been widely discussed as a potential Republican presidential candidate, and Trump has previously suggested that a Vance-Rubio ticket could be formidable. But the president has not formally endorsed a successor.
Tuesday’s losses leave Republicans preparing for the next presidential election while confronting a Democrat-controlled House and Senate for Trump’s final two years in office. Democrats flipped the Senate seats in several states Trump carried in 2024.
