Washington Voters Face Major Parental Rights Question In Tuesday’s Election

Voters in the state of Washington will decide on Tuesday whether parents have the right to see their children’s school health records and review  curriculum in a timely manner.

Washington residents who choose “yes” on Initiative IL26-001 are opting to restore parents’ rights to access information about their children from their public school. Currently, school districts encourage teachers and administrators to hide students’ gender changes from their parents.

The Auburn school district outlines its parental notification policy in “ASD 3211P Procedure Gender-Inclusive Schools.” According to the policy, when trans-identifying or “gender-expansive” students enroll in the district or when current students have a change of gender expression or identity, a school employee, such as a principal, is “encouraged” to request a meeting with the student.

“Before contacting a student’s parents, the school will consult with the student about the student’s preferences regarding family involvement and consider whether safety concerns are present for the student,” the document states.

In other words, students have the ultimate say on whether to inform parents about conversations they have about their gender with teachers or school administration.

“Before communicating with parents of transgender or gender expansive students, it’s important to ask the student how school employees should refer to the student when talking with their parents and guardians,” the policy states. “For families who are supportive, using the student’s name and pronoun could be affirming for the student. For parents who are not supportive, or who are not aware of the student’s transition at school, referring to their name and pronoun could be very dangerous.”

When The Daily Wire reached out for comment, the district replied, “The Auburn School District follows all state laws regarding this topic. We don’t have anything else to add.”

The guidance continues to instruct school employees not to disclose a student’s transgender or gender-expansive status to other school staff, students, or parents, unless they are legally required to do so or the student has authorized the disclosure.

“The district will not condone the intentional or persistent refusal to respect a student’s gender identity or gender expression or inappropriate release of information regarding a student’s transgender or gender-expansive status,” the Auburn school district policy states.

In 2023, Let’s Go Washington, a conservative political group sponsored by multimillionaire hedge fund manager Brian Heywood, collected over 420,000 signatures for the first parents’ bill of rights.

“An initiative to the legislature becomes just like any other law,” Washington Republican Sen. Phil Fortunato told The Daily Wire. “It can be changed the following session, which is exactly what the Democrats did under the guise of protecting students’ rights and mostly focusing on protecting gender identification from parents.”

In 2025, Washington Democrat Governor Bob Ferguson signed a bill that amended the first parents’ bill of rights. The amendments included a section for “eliminated rights,” and stated that “parents would not receive prior notification when medical services are being offered to their child, except where emergency medical treatment is required.”

Parents also would not “receive notification when any medical service or medications have been provided to their child that could result in any financial impact to the parent’s or legal guardian’s health insurance payments or copays; and receive notification when the school has arranged directly or indirectly for medical treatment that results in follow-up care beyond normal school hours.”

The bill also extended the period that schools had to share curriculum with parents from 10 days to 45 days.
