“You are going to see some crazy stuff tonight,” the world’s richest man said as he walked onstage at SpaceX’s rocket test site in McGregor, Texas, and greeted the audience. Musk explained that what they were about to see would be so unbelievable that their live presence was required to prove the demonstration wasn’t generated by artificial intelligence.

“We need an audience to prove that it’s not AI or SI,” Musk said, referring to the new term “super intelligence.” “You’re going to see what happens when you see a collaboration of the world’s best car company and the world’s best rocket company.”

After a 20-second countdown, the new Tesla Roadster was revealed at the bottom of a curved ramp. The car climbed the ramp and drove upside down, using a fan underneath the vehicle to hold it against the surface. At the top, the Roadster flipped over and used thrusters to bring itself back to the ground.

SpaceX contributed 10 thrusters to the car. Together with the fan under the car, the thrusters let the car hover, spin and flip over. Musk said that while going upside down wouldn’t be necessary for the average driver, the car’s intense suction system allows it to “defy physics” on the road as it comes to a stop and makes sharp turns.

Musk then showed the audience just how fast the car could go. In the demonstration, the Roadster went from zero to 60 mph in less than one second. Tesla says the car can reach speeds above 230 mph, and Musk said he eventually wants it to reach half the speed of sound, roughly 380 mph.

Musk also said the Roadster will be driven by a human, not by Tesla’s self-driving software. Musk wants the Roadster to be the only manually driven car Tesla makes, and the company touted the vehicle as “the last best driver’s car.”

Musk originally promised the second-generation Tesla Roadster in 2017, sharing a video on X of a flying car.

“The new Roadster will actually do something like this,” he said at the time.

Nearly a decade after his promise, Musk told Thursday’s audience that production would begin in 2028. He laughed as he promised them that, this time, the production would actually happen as the Roadster has had several delays over the past nine years.

Despite members of the audience yelling out, “How much?” Musk and other executives did not share a price for the new car. However, Tesla’s reservation page offered customers a “performance” version of the vehicle that requires a $50,000 deposit and a “Thrust” version of the vehicle that requires a $250,000 deposit. The “rocket” version of the car is listed as “invite only.”

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
