Footage released Thursday by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office shows 38-year-old Citibank security officer and Marine Corps veteran John Fraley fatally shooting 35-year-old Jacob Pearson during an attack on the Tampa-area office. Pearson showed up to the Citibank armed with a rifle after being contacted with a court summons over a $2,500 debt, according to police.
The footage shows Pearson walking into the building’s cafeteria armed with a rifle before Fraley stepped out of the men’s restroom and opened fire on the gunman with a handgun. Pearson fell to the ground as he was hit. Struck five times, Pearson would later die at the hospital from his wounds.
Sheriff Chad Chronister praised Fraley for his response to the attack, noting that he was able to take out the gunman by taking up a tactically sound position.
“John Fraley confronted this suspect and is a hero, plain and simple. In a moment when most people would run away from danger, this guard ran toward it and stopped the threat within minutes of the first shots being fired,” he said. “With more than 3,200 people on that campus, there is no doubt that these quick and courageous actions saved lives.”
Fraley, the vice president and intelligence lead analyst at Citibank who was authorized to carry a firearm on the bank’s campus, confronted Pearson after he rammed his vehicle into the gate of the building and fatally shot one employee. Police identified the victim as 41-year-old Leanne Selman, who worked for the bank for nine years.
“Our hearts are broken for Selman’s family, friends, and coworkers. She went to work yesterday like any other day and never came home,” Chronister said. “There is no justification for this cowardly act of senseless violence that has left a family and a community heartbroken.”
Pearson showed up at the Citibank campus after he called in a threat that he would bring a rifle and bulletproof vest to their headquarters. Police were unable to locate him before he arrived at the building.
“Unless you want me to go over there with my AR-15, my bulletproof vest and my insanity, you mf’ing cancel this court case. Do you understand me? They are only an hour and three minutes away, so the last thing you want to do is f with me,” Pearson told an attorney’s office working for the bank, according to investigators.
Four other people were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries and were released shortly after.
