Abdul El-Sayed’s 9/11 Problems Just Keep Getting Worse

If Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is trying to get away from the problems caused by his persistent association with Hasan “America deserved 9/11” Piker and his own deleted tweets downplaying the Islamic terror attacks that took place that day, he’s doing it wrong.

El-Sayed’s name got top billing for the Islamic Society of North America’s annual convention in Detroit, and he is scheduled to appear alongside a Muslim cleric conspiracy theorist — and a 9/11 “truther” at the event just days before the 25th anniversary of the deadly terrorist attacks.

El-Sayed will speak as part of a panel discussion on a “turmoiled America,” The Washington Free Beacon first reported — along with The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur and Zaid Shakir, a New Jersey cleric who has called for an “examination” of the official narrative surrounding the 9/11 attacks.

Uygur, who happens to be Piker’s uncle, has also raised questions about 9/11, delivering a lengthy rant via X in February in which he said he no longer believed the official accounts:

I no longer believe official 9/11 story. Two paper passports did not burn and were found on the rubble but it was so hot WTC7 burned down across the street. Nonsense. It’s time to look for who gained from 9/11. Our government doesn’t work for us. They’ve been lying whole time.

To my normie friends who’ll be outraged by this, we have been brainwashed by corporate media all our lives. They said that anything that isn’t the official government story is a “conspiracy theory” only insane people believe, to gaslight you into never questioning the government.

Shakir, likewise, has called for “examination” of the official narrative, claiming that there are “glaring weaknesses and inconsistencies.”

But as The Daily Wire has reported extensively, El-Sayed’s 9/11 problems are not limited to his participation in such a panel discussion. He has repeatedly rebuffed attempts — even from within his own party — to get him to distance himself from Piker.

A recent CBS News report evaluated several 9/11-related tweets that El-Sayed deleted. Two were from 2020, comparing the United States’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic to the reaction to 9/11.

In one 2020 post, CBS reported that El-Sayed argued for a national mobilization to combat COVID that mirrored the response to the 9/11 attacks — while in another from that same timeframe he argued as the COVID death toll eclipsed the number killed on 9/11, he hoped “that means we’ll spend the next ten years fighting a war for public health & against poverty … like we launched a global #WaronTerror after 9/11. We could save lives rather than take them.”

On the 20th anniversary of the deadly attacks, El-Sayed pushed “send” on a tweet suggesting that America’s response to 9/11 had been worse than the unprovoked terror attacks: “Today, I mourn the 3K lives, 6K injuries, & infrastructural devastation in NYC, perpetuated ignorantly in the name of my faith. Tomorrow, I’ll mourn ~1M lives, millions of injuries, & infrastructural devastation in 3 countries, perpetuated ignorantly in the name of my country.”

Matt Grossmann, a political scientist at Michigan State University, told CBS News that he didn’t believe a deleted tweet or two would destroy El-Sayed’s campaign — but the real threat from such tweets was that they’d bolster the overall perception that the candidate’s views were too extreme.

“Is any specific tweet going to matter for the general election? It seems unlikely,” Grossmann explained. “But does the general impression that he might be too extreme … will that make a difference? That has a bigger chance of doing so.”

Those tweets — plus his abject refusal to disavow Piker — were already ringing alarm bells. El-Sayed’s decision to join Uygur and Shakir on stage at a conference is not likely to silence them.
