Bill Belichick-UNC Drama Gets A New Twist

University of North Carolina (UNC) football General Manager Michael Lombardi has been placed on paid administrative leave, according to a statement from the school Monday morning.

Effective immediately, Lombardi will no longer be with the Tar Heels, who start preseason camp in just a few days. Lombardi has been in his current position since December 2024. UNC Head Coach Bill Belichick brought him along when he made the move from the professional to the collegiate level nearly three years ago.

Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports took to X to post UNC’s official statement about Lombardi.

“As is standard procedure with personnel matters, leadership, staff, and student-athletes are prohibited from addressing this topic further, and has no reflection on merits,” the school said.

Lombardi’s administrative leave comes after a former UNC front office employee filed a human resources complaint. The complaint has now led to a pending investigation, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

At the time of publication, UNC did not respond to The Daily Wire’s request for comment.

Lombardi, the highest-paid college football general manager at the time of his hiring, was a former NFL executive, scout, and three-time Super Bowl champion. He then worked for ESPN as an analyst and writer before reuniting with Belichick after he spent time with him on the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots.

This is not the first time the general manager’s name came up in the news. In August of last year, Lombardi traveled to Saudi Arabia to discuss “partnership opportunities” after a fan in the country reached out and wanted to support Belichick with potential name, image, and likeness deals. Just two months later, WRAL News posted a story explaining multiple sources described Lombardi as “rude,” “nasty,” and that “nobody likes him.”

Lombardi’s situation is another chapter in the saga that is the Belichick-UNC experiment. Belichick’s hire first drew criticism when the former NFL coach’s 25-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson was reportedly involved with the team.

In his first year as head coach, the Tar Heels struggled mightily, finishing 4-8 and missing their first bowl game since 2018.
