A top House Republican accused Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico of masking his liberal record with a moderate campaign image, pointing to undercover footage published by The Daily Wire in which the candidate said his views on transgender issues “haven’t changed.”

Rep. August Pfluger (R-TX), chairman of the Republican Study Committee, appeared Tuesday on The Scott Jennings Show as Talarico faces Republican Ken Paxton in the Texas Senate race.
“Can anyone in Texas trust Talarico when it comes to the trans issues or anything else?” Jennings asked Pfluger, who represents a conservative West-Central Texas district.
“Absolutely not. We know that he has been fixated on those issues,” Pfluger said.

“We know how he has voted in the Texas legislature, and the only thing that he said that was true there is my views haven’t changed, and they haven’t changed on trans issues, and they haven’t changed on wanting to kill the oil and gas industry, which, by the way, is the most important industry in the state of Texas,” he added. “They haven’t changed on any of his social issues.”
Early voting in Texas began October 19 and runs through October 30, according to the Texas Secretary of State. President Donald Trump held dual rallies there Tuesday as Republicans fret over sluggish GOP turnout.
The Daily Wire’s undercover footage captured Talarico telling a person posing as a supporter last month that his position on transgender issues had not changed. The recording was made after the Democrat attempted to recast his transgender positions in a national television appearance.
Asked whether she could count on him to defend her transgender niece’s ability to compete in women’s sports, Talarico replied, “Always,” adding that he would continue fighting for transgender youth in the Senate as he had in the Texas Legislature.
He said sports participation policies should be decided “locally” and “sport by sport, athlete by athlete,” claiming he has “the most inclusive policy of any candidate who’s running.”
In 2021, however, Talarico voted against Senate Bill 29 while serving on the Texas House Public Education Committee. The legislation sought to require public-school athletes to compete according to the sex listed on their birth certificates. Talarico was one of five committee members to vote against the bill, which passed the committee 8-5.
On Jennings’ show, Pfluger also criticized Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, accusing him of similarly trying to appeal to moderate voters while maintaining leftist positions.
“If you like what’s going on in France, then vote for El-Sayed,” Pfluger said.
“So we need to wake up as Republicans. Let’s go vote early in Texas. It’s a tough environment. Obviously, we know that. But if you don’t want open borders, if you don’t want to kill the oil and gas industry, if you don’t want men playing women’s sports, then there’s only one answer,” he added.
