“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and best friend,” his family said in a statement released by Anderson’s reps on Thursday morning. “To the world, he was a gifted country music singer whose voice and songs touched countless lives. To us, he was so much more.”

Anderson’s family went on to describe the “country trailblazer” as “the heart of our family, the one who made us laugh, loved us fiercely, and made every ordinary moment feel special.”

“We are completely heartbroken. His music will live on, but for us, his greatest legacy will always be the love he gave his family and the memories we will carry with us forever,” the statement said.

Tim McGraw, who was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on Sunday, reflected on Anderson’s passing in an Instagram post.

“I was talking with John Sunday night at the HOF ceremony,” McGraw shared on Wednesday alongside a photo of the pair at the event. “He was in such good spirits. We talked, we laughed, we sang his songs that I loved so much together, just goofing off.”

“I am completely heartbroken by his passing. There will never be a stylist in music, any music, that was so defining as his. It’s just devastating,” McGraw’s post went on. “All of our love goes out to his family and the country music community. He was and is one of the defining voices in country music. So great. I am completely shook.”

Reba McEntire also shared a tribute, calling Anderson “one of my favorite people in this business.”

The country singer’s best-known hit — the 1983 single “Swingin’” — sold more than one million copies.

His impressive career began in 1977 with the release of his first single, “I’ve Got a Feelin’ (Somebody’s Been Stealin’).” Over the next several decades, Anderson charted more than 40 singles on the Billboard country music charts, including five number ones: “Wild and Blue,” “Swingin,'” “Black Sheep,” “Straight Tequila Night,” and “Money in the Bank.” Over that time, he released 22 albums with multiple labels.

Anderson was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2024.

“This is an institution that preserves greatness. That I get the chance to be amongst this kind of greatness, words can’t explain,” Anderson said at the time.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
