Florida Democrat Senate candidate Angela Nixon pushed back on claims that she supported abolishing prisons, arguing that she couldn’t possibly support abolishing prisons because she wants her opponent, Sen. Ashley Moody (R-FL), thrown behind bars.

Nixon laid out her case during a recent appearance on CNN’s “The Arena with Kasie Hunt” and fellow guest Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), complaining that Republicans had been using attack ads to spread “lies” about her.
“They are spreading, like, a lot of disinformation and lies on commercials about me, of saying things like, I want to abolish prisons and I want to defund the police,” Nixon claimed, as Murphy sat beside her with a straight face. “Why would I want to do that when I want her [Moody] locked up and punished in jail for what she has done?”
Nixon claimed that Moody, the former Florida attorney general, had been implicated in the Florida Hope Scandal and should be thrown in jail for her part in it. In January of 2026, a secret grand jury found that Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis’ administration had misappropriated $10 million from a $67 million Medicaid fraud settlement from two years prior. Although Moody and current Attorney General James Uthmeier (R-FL) were named in the grand jury’s findings — that the money in question had been diverted for political purposes — no indictments were ever issued because individual culpability could not be determined.
Complicating Nixon’s claim, of course, is her status as a card-carrying member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). The DSA has long advocated for reimagining policing from the top down, eventually abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), police, and prisons entirely. And adding insult to irony is the fact that she’s running for a seat in the U.S. Senate — which the DSA has also targeted for elimination.
Nixon’s own website, under priorities, states that she supports “ending for-profit prisons and detention centers,” “ending mass incarceration,” and “demilitarizing policing investing in community-based public safety, violence prevention and crisis response.”
