DOJ Launches New Crackdown To Protect The American Vote

The Justice Department took action against a slew of foreign nationals accused of lying about their citizenship to vote in federal elections. 

Nine foreign nationals, including multiple illegal immigrants, were charged with election-related crimes while two others pleaded guilty on similar charges, the Justice Department announced Monday. The department additionally hit a United States Postal Service employee with charges for destroying hundreds of mail-in ballots.

“Despite the media and Democrats denying it for decades, non-citizens continue to register and vote in federal elections,” White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis told The Daily Wire. “Our message to aliens who vote in American elections is clear: we will find you, arrest you, and you will face the consequences including deportation. Only Americans should be electing America’s leaders.” 

The action comes as President Donald Trump has pushed the Senate to pass the SAVE Act, legislation that would require proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections. Trump has long warned that not enough safeguards are in place to ensure that foreign nationals aren’t influencing American elections. 

One of the cases involved 20-year-old Filipino national Bernadette Acaso, who pleaded guilty to illegally casting a mail-in ballot during the 2024 election. Acaso admitted to voting by mail in the November 2024 election after registering to vote in March 2024 despite not being an American citizen, according to her plea agreement. She later lied about her vote when she was interviewed by immigration officials. 

In a case out of Florida, Haitian national Valery Zidor admitted to voting in the 2024 presidential election after registering to vote and lying about his citizenship. At the time of his vote, Zidor was in the United States under Temporary Protected Status, a status that has since been ended by the Trump administration. 

The department also announced nine charges against foreign nationals. 

This includes charges for voting as a non-citizen in three federal elections against a 75-year-old Canadian illegal immigrant named Christiane Vinette Young. Young, who was living in Florida, is accused of voting in the 2024 general election, the 2022 general election, and the 2022 primary. 

One of the defendants, Nigerian national George Olawunmi Johnson, has been illegally registered to vote since 2010, according to prosecutors. Johnson, a lawful permanent resident, is accused of voting in Kansas in 2024. No lawyer was yet listed for Johnson in court records. 

In another case, the Justice Department said that 49-year-old Venezuelan national Danubis Bernat was allowed to vote in person in New Jersey during the 2024 election. 

Charges were also announced against two illegal immigrants from Mexico and Haiti living in Pennsylvania for illegally voting in recent federal elections. Additionally, the department accused a 34-year-old U.S. Postal Service worker named Damon Matai Seei of throwing away about 300 mail-in ballots belonging to registered Utah voters.
