Huerta died at her home on Wednesday in Bakersfield, California, surrounded by her close family, her foundation announced.
Born in New Mexico and raised by a single mother in California's San Joaquin Valley, Huerta began her career as a schoolteacher before helping establish a local chapter of a grassroots organization that challenged segregation and police brutality.
Eventually, her focus turned to labor organizing, and together with Cesar Chavez, whom she'd later accuse of sexual abuse, she built the National Farm Workers Association in 1962. Four years later, that association merged with another organization to form the United Farm Workers union.
This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
