Ed Sheeran Bends The Knee To Antisemitic Mob

Singer Ed Sheeran just had a public meltdown, weeping and apologizing for offending the antisemitic fans who have been trashing him for the past week.

“I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician, but this put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet,” Sheeran told a crowd of concert attendees in Philadelphia on Saturday night as anti-Israel protesters gathered outside the venue. 

The “Shape of You” singer noted that it’s been “one of the worst weeks” of his life.

“I have tried in my career not to be a political commentator of any kind, because I want my music and shows to be about unity, not division, about humanity, not politics,” Sheeran said. He went on to talk more and still tried to avoid taking sides.

“But this is a humanitarian issue. I cannot hide how I feel about it anymore. What happened in Israel, and at the music festival on October 7th, was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain,” Sheeran said as he broke down in tears, as the New York Post reported.

He added, “What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate. My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and loss of civilian life and loss of children’s lives. And the systemic injustice we’re seeing unfolding in the West Bank cannot be overlooked.”

Sheeran told the crowd that he’s used to people making fun of his music, but said this cuts deeper.

“This week the criticism was about something much more important, and I’ve had to … make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes, and I’m so, so sorry.”

After acknowledging that the tour is different without Macklemore and the other supporting acts that dropped out, Sheeran confirmed that the shows would go on and he would not cancel the rest of the tour. 

“Honoring my commitment to my fans is also completely central to who I am. And that is why I’m here tonight, on my own,” he said as the crowd applauded.

“I am deeply worried about the idea that venues should pre-approve content of performance,” the singer went on, saying it’s not something that should happen “in the free world.” 

Sheeran said, “The world is heading to a very, very, very dark place,” and noted that concerts are meant to combat this division. 

“If we get too divided … we need to come back to humanity, realize that we are all the same, and we understand each other,” he went on before introducing the musicians who replaced those who dropped out. 

At another point he started crying again, saying, “In these situations, you really find out who your friends are.”

He went on, “I have so many people telling me to cancel this tour and so many people falling out of my life that I’ve known for years and years and years, people just kind of backing away … And then, you know, I’m there, and everyone’s telling me to cancel, and I’m feeling my friends and family, and people I know, abandon me.”

But he said he ultimately decided, “If this tour ends, love doesn’t win.”

This soliloquy was spurred by Macklemore being dropped from the remainder of Sheeran’s “The Loop” tour in the United States following anti-Israel rants he gave on stage while performing as an opening act earlier this month. Macklemore responded by blaming a Jewish man, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, for orchestrating his cancellation, and implied Sheeran was a coward for not defending him. 

“… There is no neutral position between the oppressor and the oppressed. When one side has the bombs and bottomless financial and military support from America, refusing to take a side doesn’t leave you in the middle,” the rapper said.
