One week before Tina Burger gave birth, her husband, an Afrikaner farmer, was killed by an unknown attacker. Nearly three decades later, she stepped off a plane at Washington Dulles International Airport to start a new life in America.

Tina and her second husband, Fred, were among 42 refugees from 18 Afrikaner families who arrived at Dulles Tuesday evening, the latest in a Trump administration resettlement effort that has now brought more than 17,000 South Africans to the United States.

Tina and Fred both want to get to work right away. Tina told The Daily Wire she sees it as her duty to give back to American society.

“I want to mean something. I want to give something of myself to your country to say thank you for what you are doing for me. To give me the opportunities to start a new life, a better life than I’ve had in South Africa.”

Another Afrikaner refugee who wished to remain anonymous told The Daily Wire he “didn’t want any preferential treatment, just equal opportunities.”

“We don’t want to be blamed for everything, we don’t want to be discriminated against,” he added.

The refugee said that safety is a major concern.

“I’ve known three people personally in the last couple of years that’ve been murdered,” he said. “That’s hectic. Nobody wants that.”

“I just want to stay in a place where I’m valued, where I can contribute, without fear and favor. Not be treated as a second class citizen,” he continued.

Ulda, a young mother with her husband and two kids, told The Daily Wire that she is excited to be able to “start living.” She said that back home, her family’s skin color kept her children in a narrow loop: school, church, home. They did not go to the playground, she explained, because the family feared they could be persecuted or killed.

Ulda also said her parents are still in South Africa, and she hopes to bring them to the United States as her father is an Afrikaner farmer.

“We are pleading with anyone willing to listen,” she told The Daily Wire. “My father is a farmer but not the 19-year-old boy he was 40 years ago.”

The fears explained by Ulda are at the center of the Trump administration’s case for the refugee program. The executive order Trump signed in February 2025 points to South Africa’s Expropriation Act, which allows the government to seize land without compensation in some cases. The Trump administration calls the practice government-sponsored discrimination against white Afrikaners.

Isolated farms across South Africa have been hit by violent attacks for years, but South Africa’s government denies that Afrikaners are being singled out because of their race.

Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary Alex Adams told The Daily Wire that the administration is happy to offer Afrikaners refuge because they want to assimilate to American society.

“These are the folks who love our country. They want to be model citizens. They want to integrate into society,” Adams said. “They want to get to work, and they want to be self-sufficient. That’s the American dream to me, and we’re pleased to give them that opportunity.”

The mood at the airport on Tuesday was celebratory. The South African families waved American flags as they posed for photos after their long flights. Each family also received a gift bag from the Department of Health and Human Services that was stuffed with an American flag, a patriotic children’s book, information on the Founding Fathers, a copy of the Declaration of Independence, and a PragerU book on America’s founders.

“The legal immigrants welcome today deserve to understand the founding values that make America the freest and most prosperous nation on earth,” PragerU CEO Marissa Streit told The Daily Wire, adding, “PragerU is proud to offer content, and we commend the administration for taking steps to ensure the civic onboarding process for all new Americans is substantive, dignified, and worthy of this country’s founding ideals.”

As of October, over 17,000 South African refugees have arrived in the United States since Trump signed his executive order. The administration plans to bring over 17,000 more Afrikaner refugees next year as well.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
