EXCLUSIVE: Far-Left Dem In Toss-Up Race Attacks ‘The Old American Dream’ Days Before Midterms

A far-Left Democrat congressional candidate asked for “grace” for the “stupid stuff” he said in the past and then proclaimed, “We’re not going to go back to the old American dream,” exclusive video obtained by The Daily Wire shows. 

The comments from Democrat candidate William Lawrence come as he competes against Republican Rep. Tom Barrett in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District while facing questions about past calls to defund the police and abolish the U.S. Senate. Tens of millions of dollars have poured into the swing district as both parties fight for control of the House. 

“Give each other the same grace we’re asking the whole district to give me in the face of whatever stupid stuff I may have said 10 or 15 years ago,” Lawrence said while speaking to Michiganders recently. His campaign did not respond when asked by The Daily Wire what “stupid stuff” he was referring to. 

Lawrence has repeatedly attempted to distance himself from some of the positions he once advocated as he attempts to court moderate Michigan voters, including comments he made only a few years ago. As he kicked off his campaign, he deleted hundreds of social media posts. This included an October 2020 call to “Abolish the Senate,” and a post he made in November 2021 where he said, “F*ck isolation and the nuclear family domicile.”

In another post from August 2021 he asked the public to “envision a world of free and open migration,” and he gushed over a leftist organization’s campaign to defund the police in another post. 

“We are nearer to a world without police and prisons because of their efforts,” he said in November 2021. “It’s always two steps forward, one step back, until the day we win.”

At the same time as he demanded “grace” for his past comments, Lawrence said the American dream needed to be completely redefined. 

“And what we’re doing here is we’re talking about really renewing the American dream, which is to have good housing and healthcare, good jobs and education, clean air and water here in Michigan, and the time to enjoy it with our families,” he said in the video obtained by The Daily Wire. “You know, I say renew, rather than rebuild, because it has to be new. We’re not going to go back to the old American dream.” 

The comment is reminiscent of former President Barack Obama’s infamous 2008 vow that the work of “fundamentally transforming the United States of America” would begin if he was elected president. 

Lawrence’s campaign platform includes leftist positions such as promising “healthcare for all,” stabilizing “prices and markets,” making end the life of an unborn child through abortion a federal right, attacking ICE, and creating a “path to citizenship” for illegal immigrants. 

Lawrence, a former member of the Democratic Socialists of America, is endorsed by leftist Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and leftist Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. He also co-founded the Left-wing Sunrise Movement, a group that wants to force the United States to implement the so-called policies of the “Green New Deal” to “end the era of fossil fuels,” and “abolish the police.” 

The Democrat candidate previously chalked up some of his more extreme posts to youthful indiscretions. 

“Like many millennials, I’ve done my fair share of thinking out loud on the internet,” he told CNN. “I’ve been clear that I disagree today with some things I posted in the past. I don’t support defunding the police or open borders.”

The race between Lawrence and Barrett is currently rated as a toss-up by Cook Political Report.
