Fans Wearing XX-XY Athletics Gear Booted From Soccer Game, Sports Bar

A Portland professional soccer team and a prominent women’s sports bar removed fans wearing apparel from XX-XY Athletics, a company that opposes allowing men who claim to identify as women to compete in women’s sports.

A group of eight fans attended the women’s soccer match between the Portland Thorns and the Washington Spirit at the stadium Providence Park Sunday, but security escorted them from the venue. Later, the Sports Bra, a women’s sports bar, expelled the same fans over the XX-XY Athletics t-shirts.

XX-XY Athletics, a sports brand aiming to compete with Nike, notes biological differences between the sexes that give men advantages in many sports. The t-shirts emphasize “XX” and “XY,” the chromosomal markers of men and women, to focus on sex rather than gender identity.

“I would love to hear, why are we being ejected today?” Amy Sousa, one of the women wearing an XX-XY branded shirt, asks in a video published by Fox News.

“I was made aware that some transphobic…” a security guard responds, while women object and cut him off.

The guard states that “somebody was giving out information,” and the women object to that claim, saying they did not distribute materials.

A Portland Thorns spokesperson said the fans had been removed for distributing “unapproved materials.”

“During our September 6 match against the Washington Spirit, individuals were removed from Providence Park for distributing unapproved materials, a violation of the Fan Experience Guidelines at the stadium,” the spokesperson told Outkick. “Our priority remains fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for every fan at Providence Park.”

The spokesperson noted that the matter is still being investigated.

“We did not distribute any materials,” Sousa told Outkick. “We came armed with copies of their own code of conduct and we followed it to the letter.”

“They are lying about us,” she added. “They have violated our rights. My group was targeted for political beliefs I speak about online.”

That evening, the fans went to the Sports Bra, a bar dedicated to women’s sports. A waitress asked them to leave, stating that the shirts made attendees uncomfortable.

The bar posted a statement on Instagram, confirming the expulsions.

“On Sunday, Sept. 6, a group entered wearing apparel with messages advocating for the exclusion of trans women from sports,” the bar noted. “When our team respectfully gave the group the choice to cover the anti-trans messaging or leave, they chose to leave.”

“At The Sports Bra, our mission is simple: support, promote, and empower ALL girls and women in sports,” the statement added. “To be clear: trans girls are girls, and trans women are women.”

Jennifer Sey, the founder of XX-XY Athletics, commented on the controversy.

“What’s a girl gotta do to watch a pro women’s soccer game?” she asked on X. “Apparently NOT wear an [XX-XY Athletics] shirt.”
