The “Will & Grace” actress cited a decline in living conditions in her hometown of Brooklyn as the reason for putting her support behind Bruce Blakeman’s gubernatorial campaign, as the New York Post reported.
“I am so grateful you are running. You are what we need more than anything,” she told Blakeman, a Nassau County executive, during a recent fundraiser, as the outlet noted. “The decline in this city over the last four years has been so exponential and devastating — economically, socially and on every level. And obviously, we’ve lost so much business here. People are leaving,” she said.
Messing said that she loved New York City, but added that in its current state, it was, “not the city I love anymore.”
“I believe in all my heart that you are the answer. You are the affordable campaign candidate,” the actress told Blakeman.
“People are just really struggling. They need their utilities to be lower,” she went on. “It’s just too expensive to live in New York City, and I love the fact that is at the top of your mind.”
Messing has a long history of supporting Democratic candidates including Hillary Clinton and fellow actress Cynthia Nixon, who also ran for governor of New York. But Messing, who is Jewish, has blasted members of her party before, especially following the terrorist attack on October 7.
Last November, Messing re-shared a post that described mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani as, “an actual communist jihadist. A literal Karl Marx-quoting, America-hating jihadist.”
Blakeman, who is running against incumbent Democratic governor Kathy Hochul, thanked Messing for her support and for having the “courage to speak out.”
“She is trying as hard as she can to save New York and to make sure it’s safe for Jewish people who live in this community and in this state,” he said. The GOP candidate is running on a platform that promises tax cuts for New Yorkers.
President Trump is planning to campaign with Blakeman later this week in upstate New York, the outlet noted.
