Of the 12 known victims, six are adults and six are juveniles, Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence E. Revell said during a news conference.

The youngest victim was 11 years old, according to Revell.

"Tonight, our thoughts are with the victims and their families as they face the devastating impact of this violence," Revell said.

"It is especially heartbreaking to know that children are among those injured," he continued. "In the moments immediately following the shooting, and before the scene was fully secure, our officers put their own safety at risk to carry victims to safety and transport them to the hospital. Their actions were nothing short of heroic and reflect the courage and compassion our officers bring to this community every day."

Police said preliminary information indicated a physical altercation occurred before the shooting.

Authorities described the altercation as an isolated incident involving two or three individuals.

No arrests had been announced as of the latest police update.

The shooting occurred during Florida A&M University's Homecoming Week, as students and alumni gathered in Tallahassee for the annual celebrations.

The Tallahassee Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the shooting as detectives work to identify those responsible.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
