In 1973, French author Jean Raspail published “The Camp of the Saints,” a dystopian novel imagining a bleak future where massive waves of migrants from the Third World overwhelmed France and Western Europe. In 2026, it is hard to deny that his story has leapt from the page to reality.

Today, European cities like London look more like Pakistan than England, and Paris is infamous for its Islamist-infested banlieues where the police fear to tread.

Republicans have frequently sounded the alarm over the fundamental transformation mass migration has wrought across Europe. On the heels of more than 70,000 illegal migrants flooding into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta, President Donald Trump warned that if Republicans lose power, America could face something “worse, on a much bigger scale.”

Vice President JD Vance agreed, posting on social media: “These images out of Spain are an unfortunate reminder of the consequences of mass migration and radical left-wing globalist policies that have enabled the Invasion of the West.”

My colleague Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., warned, “Ceuta isn’t just Europe’s problem, it’s America’s warning,” while Rep. Mary Miller, R-Ill., called Ceuta a “preview” of the potential disaster facing the United States if Democrats regain power.

America should heed those warnings.

After four years of Democratic mismanagement of the southern border under President Joe Biden, preceded by eight years of the Obama administration, America finally has an opportunity to secure the nation against another flood of illegal immigration thanks to President Trump’s decisive action.

But the Trump administration’s work at the border can only go so far if its achievements rest primarily on executive action. What one president does through executive authority, another president can undo.

Congress has a way to ensure that no European-style catastrophe happens here.

Congress should pass the Permanent Trump Secure Border Act and protect the president’s most important border-security policies with the force of federal law.

At its core, the bill would codify key enforcement and asylum reforms implemented by President Trump, making it far more difficult for a future Democratic president to dismantle them.

It would crack down on abuse of the asylum system and parole authority, as well as the exploitation of laws governing unaccompanied alien children; all mechanisms the Biden administration utilized to flood the U.S. with illegal migrants.

The package builds on the Trump administration’s successful enforcement policies by codifying Migrant Protection Protocols, ending catch-and-release, and pursuing Asylum Cooperative Agreements designed to prevent asylum seekers from skipping multiple safe countries only to claim asylum at our borders.

Together, these policies constitute the most urgent package of border-security needs considered by this Congress. If passed, they would establish a durable baseline for securing American sovereignty long after the current administration leaves office.

House Republicans have already demonstrated that such legislation can pass muster.

In 2023, Republicans overwhelmingly approved the Secure the Border Act, which contained many of the same reforms. At the time, conservative advocacy group Heritage Action called the legislation a “historic rejection of Biden’s lawlessness,” praising the various provisions to defend America against invasion.

Though the bill ultimately languished in the Senate, the fact that it passed the House shows there’s at least an appetite for a comprehensive immigration reform package.

The lesson of the Biden years is that executive orders are not enough, and permanent solutions must be sought. President Trump may have secured the border today, but unless Congress acts, a future Democratic president could once again throw the gates wide open tomorrow.

Europe shows what can happen when political leaders refuse to defend their borders until the consequences become nearly impossible to reverse. Hordes of anti-Western migrants strain society to the breaking point, while crimes like rape, murder, and theft balloon.

America can still choose a different course.

Congress should seize the opportunity and pass the Permanent Trump Secure Border Act, enact President Trump’s border reforms into law, and ensure no future administration can so easily subject America to the disaster now unfolding across Europe.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
