Former ‘American Idol’ Contestant Convicted In Murder Of Devoted Wife

Caleb Flynn, the disgraced former “American Idol” contestant and pastor who traded his wedding vows for an affair with a church intern, was found guilty of killing his wife on Tuesday by a Miami County, Ohio, jury.

The jury took just two hours to reach a unanimous guilty verdict for Flynn’s bedside execution of his devoted 37-year-old wife Ashley. The charges included aggravated murder, for which the maximum sentence is life in prison without parole.

Flynn, 40, once serenaded national TV audiences gushing about his “pretty” bride. But prosecutors showed the court a cold-hearted killer so desperate to start a new life with his 24-year-old mistress that he shot his wife to death while their two young daughters slept in the next room.

The murder occurred inside the couple’s Tipp City, Ohio, home early on February 16. Flynn dialed 911, claiming a shadowy intruder had broken into the garage and shot Ashley. He even put on a show for responding officers’ bodycams, blubbering, “Is she gone, sir?”

But prosecutors proved Flynn shot Ashley twice in the back of the head while she was fast asleep, then staged a break-in. FBI agents tore his story apart, testifying there were no pry marks outside the door, and the only gouges in the door frame were made from the inside.

Flynn’s church-intern mistress, Alleigha Botner, told the jury, “I hate him,” before reading aloud from numerous vile text messages exchanged during their 18-month fling.

The texts revealed a man utterly consumed by rage. Flynn called his wife “douche,” “spawn of Satan,” and a “b*tch.” In March 2025, Botner wrote, “What can I do?” Flynn responded, “Kill her.” He lamented his domestic life, texting in August 2025: “I was up until 4 a.m. last night crying, literally trying to think of ways to kill her and not go to jail.” In another message, he sneered: “If I could literally kill her and not go to hell, I would do it in a heartbeat.”

As Botner urged Flynn to leave his wife, setting deadline after deadline, Flynn made his decision. The night before Ashley’s bloody execution, he sent chilling final notes to his mistress: “It’s happening,” “about to be free,” and promising that February 16 would be “a day I never forget.”

Ashley’s sister Kayla told the court of Flynn’s two daughters discovering their father’s affair, “They were mostly brokenhearted for Mommy. They were shocked, they were upset for their mom because they said, ‘She loved daddy more than anyone else in life. So why did Daddy not love her as much?’”

Flynn’s defense lawyers tried to blame Botner, noting she dropped her phone in the ocean and lost her laptop weeks before the murder. But Ring camera footage proved she was home at the time of the killing.

While Flynn tried to claim he didn’t want to lose his salary or his church gig, prosecutors scoffed.

“He had a lawful way to leave, but he was too greedy,” prosecutor Paul Watkins declared during closing arguments. “People lie. Evidence doesn’t.”

Flynn is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday, October 5.

Outside the courtroom, Ashley’s family expressed gratitude for the verdict, while the prosecutor urged the public to forget Flynn and remember Ashley.

“This world would be a much better place if all of us in it lived like Ashley,” Watkins said.
