“They’re so common sense that it’s hard to find anyone who disagrees with them,” Washington State Rep. Joel McEntire, a Republican, told The Daily Wire. “So naturally, the Democrats, because this is partisan in nature, Democrats have told their people to vote ‘no’ on these things. ‘No, no, no’ is what they’ve told their constituents.”
The parents’ rights initiative would guarantee Washingtonians’ rights to review their children’s instructional material, access school records, be notified when their children receive medical services, and opt their children out of certain classes.
“If you’re in Texas, if you’re in Georgia, if you’re in Ohio, if you’re in a state where Democrats are trying to make their plays back, and they get control, what they’re doing in Washington State is exactly the same spirit of policy that Democrats nationwide want to enact, and they will enact it there too,” McEntire said. “And you’ll fall behind in your educational standards if you allow the Democrats to have this kind of control in other states, like they have in Washington. So beware.”
The initiative to protect girls’ sports would prohibit biologically male students from entering competitions intended for female athletes only. Thus, athletes will need to provide proof of their sex, which can be done through a physical exam, cheek swab, or blood test.
Washington state law already requires student athletes to complete a physical to participate in middle or high school sports, so this initiative would not impose an unnecessary burden on athletes.
Aly Wilson, a student at Eastmont High School, recalled the time she qualified for the Cashmere Junior Olympics when she was in 8th grade, only to be booted out of her spot by a boy.
“Only the top two athletes from each event qualified for this meet. And that season, I had dislocated my kneecap playing basketball and spent months in painful rehab to recover just to earn that spot,” Wilson said at a February listening session. “When I arrived at the Junior Olympics, I had no idea I’d be racing against a biological boy. I didn’t even realize it until after the race when he stood on the podium in first place and every girl, including me, was pushed down one spot.”
Lauren Leggieri, a lifelong Democrat and a lesbian, said defending girls’ sports is not a rejection of boys experiencing distress around their identity.
“The initiative is not about judging these boys,” Leggieri said at the session. “It’s not about denying their struggles. It’s about protecting girls’ sports because girls deserve spaces where their bodies, their safety, and their opportunities are respected.”
House Democrats rejected a motion to hold public hearings for the parents’ rights and girls’ sports initiatives, so Republicans hosted two listening sessions. No Democrats attended the sessions.
The third initiative will bring an end to the income tax, which is set to take effect on January 1, 2028. Washington’s new law, which establishes a 9.9% tax on individual or household income exceeding $1 million, passed over unanimous Republican opposition, and several Democrats also voted against it.
Democratic legislators project this “millionaire’s tax” to bring in $3.5 billion each year. Democrats promised to use this tax to fund other endeavors, such as free breakfast and lunch for all students, expansion of the working families tax credit, and investments in affordable childcare.
“All new taxes proposed by Democrats come with promises of the great things it will fund,” McEntire told The Daily Wire. “I have seen many new taxes by Democrats, but never have I seen their promises fulfilled.”
Opponents of the income tax question its constitutionality.
In a landmark 1933 case, the state Supreme Court ruled that a graduated state income tax was unconstitutional. The Court based its argument on Article VII of the state constitution, which says that all taxes must be uniform based on the same class of property.
Since income falls under the legal definition of “property” and the 1933 graduated income tax would tax people differently based on their income level, the Court ruled the tax unconstitutional. Similarly, the income tax that Washington Democratic Governor Bob Ferguson signed earlier this year would only tax those within a certain income bracket.
