“We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign. She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well,” Zacharia at her first press briefing at the White House.
Guilfoyle resigned later that day in a post on X, while also denying allegations of misconduct.
This comes after the Wall Street Journal first reported on text messages that indicated a Greek tycoon funded luxury trips for Guilfoyle. The Journal and others reported that Guilfoyle, a former Fox News personality who was previously engaged to Donald Trump Jr., had boasted about luxury trips and close ties to the Trump administration.
Guilfoyle and the U.S. Embassy in Greece are reportedly under investigation by the State Department’s Office of the Inspector General, two people familiar with the decision confirmed to NBC News last week.
A Trump donor named Eric Deters reportedly accused Guilfoyle of asking him to pay down her $100,000 credit card bill ahead of her 2025 confirmation hearing in the Senate in exchange for access to Trump administration officials. Guilfoyle asked for the $100,000 to be wired and wrote, “It won’t show up anywhere if you wire money to American Express,” the Journal first reported. Deters told CBS News he had “no doubt it was pay-to-play” when Guilfoyle asked for funds.
The short press briefing was held before 10 a.m. EDT. At 11:17 a.m., Guilfoyle posted on X that, “Serving as the United States Ambassador to Greece has been the honor of a lifetime.”
In the lengthy post, she continued, “I also want to address the recent allegations against me. These allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity. … I will not allow false accusations to define my decades of public service.”
Speaking to reporters later, President Donald Trump was asked about her resignation.
“She went to Greece where was doing a good job, but we didn’t like what we were hearing,” Trump said.
However, Guilfoyle’s lawyers also disputed the authenticity of the texts.
On Monday, the president foreshadowed the ouster. When asked Monday if he would fire Guilfoyle, Trump said, “We’re looking at it.”
Guilfoyle’s lawyers, David Schwartz and Jesse Binnall, reportedly denied any wrongdoing. They said the $100,000 she had requested from the Trump donor was a payment for services rendered, including public appearances and speaking engagements, and was not made in exchange for help from the administration for personal tax and legal matters.
The Journal also reported an alleged threat from Guilfoyle to a Greek official at a March dinner in Athens.
The Associated Press reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio was “extremely pissed off” by her alleged conduct.
Guilfoyle was previously married to California Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom.
This is a developing story.
