New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, viewed as a centrist Democrat, has drawn criticism from New York elected officials and political strategists alike, who claimed that she recently embraced positions of the Democratic Socialists of America in the name of “self-preservation.”

The organization, headquartered in the Empire State, has long advocated for reducing prison populations, abolishing any cooperation with immigration enforcement while creating a sanctuary state, and elevating Islam in America’s society and political system.
“I’ve had private conversations with some Democrat colleagues who’ve expressed a lot of disgust with them, but publicly are willing to go along with their agenda for the sake of self-preservation,” New York City Councilwoman Vickie Paladino told the Daily Signal. “Not only politically, [but] these people fear for their safety as much as their careers. This is no joke. Opposing the DSA as a Democrat official carries real risk now. These are very bad people. I don’t think that’s sunk in yet.”
“Hochul has folded completely to the DSA,” Paladino continued, before describing Hochul’s apparent political move as “unsurprising,” given that “all Democrats in this city are terrified of the DSA.”
Similarly, Steve Cortes, conservative political strategist and founder of the League of American Workers, told the Daily Signal that the governor’s recent actions “prove that she prioritizes radical narratives over effective governing and prefers posturing versus logic.”
Hochul and the Democratic Socialists of America did not respond to the Daily Signal’s request for comment.
Islamified
On Friday, during an event with Muslim leaders at the Islamic Center of New York, Hochul was seen wearing a hijab, the traditional head covering that women are forced to wear in parts of the Islamic world.
As reported by the South Shore Press, this is not the first time Hochul has done so. During the funeral of NYPD Detective Didarul Islam last summer, Hochul, who wore a hijab, was mocked by a sitting U.S. senator for considering herself as a “feminist.”
Similarly, Cortes noted to the Daily Signal that “Hochul plays the feminist card while she embraces male-dominated Islam, gladly donning a hijab to proclaim her alleged ‘liberation.'”
Since 2021, Hochul signed key legislation that divides the collection of demographic data for the different regions of the Middle East, declared January Muslim American Month, and categorized the threat of removal of a hijab as second-degree aggravated harassment.
In a statement to the Daily Signal, the York Republican Party described her apparent embrace of Islam as a consequence of belonging to a political party that “has been taken over by these radical extremists, including DSA socialists like Zohran Mamdani and other openly antisemitic Islamic extremists who believe America deserved 9/11.”
“[Her] refusal to exorcise these demons from their party is an act of extreme cowardice and demonstrates that none are fit for office,” a spokesperson for the party continued.
Rep. Randy Fine, R-Fla., the only Jewish Republican in Congress, told the Daily Signal that it is “very disappointing” that “25 years after 3,000 Americans were killed” by Islamic terrorism, “we have to deal with the threat of mainstream Islam.”
“It is not compatible with American values. It’s not only not protected by the First Amendment, but it also violates the First Amendment,” Fine continued, before slamming the Left’s “fetishization” of an ideology that “seeks our own destruction.”
Gangster Paradise
An April internal memo showed that state officials under the governor’s leadership mandated the release of thousands of prisoners convicted of drug offenses.
After firing more than 2,000 corrections officers last year, Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Commissioner Daniel Martuscello III, who was nominated to the position by Hochul, wrote in the internal memo that a “staffing crisis” at the state’s correctional facilities was the reason for the release.
“In order to have the appropriate balance between the safety and well-being of those working and residing in DOCCS Correctional Facilities and public safety,” Martuscello III continued, “[it is] appropriate to move individuals from the Department’s general confinement facilities into Residential Treatment outcount status.”
The state Department of Corrections and Mamdani did not respond to the Daily Signal’s request for comment.
Kristen Cianci, a conservative political strategist who focuses on the political landscape in the Northeastern region, told the Daily Signal that Hochul’s move towards radical criminal enforcement policies is a calculated move from the governor to “completely fall in line with her new boss Zohran Mamdani and his socialist agenda.”
According to Cianci, Hochul has done so to win the support of democratic socialists in the upcoming elections.
“Hochul will do anything to ensure the far-left radical base supports her re-election, including doubling down on reckless policies that protect criminals over law-abiding New Yorkers, drive businesses and opportunity from the state, and increase costs for hardworking families,” Cianci said.
Immigration Enforcement
Recently, Hochul’s legislation, the “Local Cops, Local Crimes Act,” took effect, effectively barring state and local law enforcement agencies from entering into or maintaining 287(g) agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for federal civil immigration enforcement.
“The termination of 287(g) agreements is a critical victory for immigrant New Yorkers and for public safety across the state,” the president of the New York Immigration Coalition wrote in a press release.
“As ICE continues to ramp up its enforcement tactics and spread fear among immigrant New Yorkers, ending these agreements sends a powerful message [to the Trump administration],” the release continued.
The state, under Hochul’s direction, also sued the local police department for refusing to cut ties with ICE.
Cortes noted that her new efforts to protect illegal immigration were done in order “to remain in good standing with the most radical elements of the current Democrat Party.”
“Hochul protects illegal aliens, instead of the citizens she supposedly serves,” Cortes continued. “Never forget that Laken Riley’s killer was first arrested in New York and could have been stopped and deported then and there, before murdering an innocent young American woman in broad daylight at the University of Georgia.”
New York State Attorney General Letitia James did not respond to the Daily Signal’s request for comment.
