How America Is Funding Its Own Downfall

Welfarism is not the end of the world; it’s possible for robust civilizations to pursue a certain amount of welfarism. Many states have done this over time.

But that’s not what we’re seeing right now. What we’re seeing is something different: the voluntary self-abnegation of powerful civilizations.
Robust civilizations want their civilizational values to predominate. If they’re lucky, those robust civilizations share America’s traditions: free speech, liberty, and private property. Robust civilizations defend their values and wish for those values to be spread elsewhere.
But as civilizations weaken, they turn inward and decide they are guilty of all the problems of the world. Then they decide what is really necessary on planet Earth is to withdraw from the world and build Utopia at home. They convince themselves that endless welfarism is a substitute for civilizational confidence and national greatness.
Some great indicators of this have emerged over time.
Every time the Olympics come around, the host nation creates an entire show about what makes it special. Flash back to 2012, when the U.K. hosted the Olympics. It created an entire routine about the National Health Service.
There was nothing about the spread of British civilization around the globe, the spread of liberty, Anglo-American law around the globe, or the end of slavery.
Instead, the U.K. pushed the National Health Service at the Olympics opening. They had people dancing on giant beds with the gigantic NHS insignia.
It was totally insane. This was supposed to be about the greatness of the U.K., but instead we got Mary Poppins and the National Health Service.
It wasn’t just welfarism; it was welfarism plus the belief that the sins of the past mean that you are guilty and thus you must import the Third World and open your borders.
The great historian Niall Ferguson wrote in The Free Press a piece titled “Why Europe Is Burning.” He stated:
A clue for the European young: It’s not Donald Trump or Benjamin Netanyahu or whoever else you want to burn in effigy. Mais, non: It’s your grandparents. … The French (and British and Italian) fiscal crisis is at root due to generational imbalances in welfare and tax systems, exacerbated by reflexive Keynesian spending every time anything nasty happens (a financial crisis, a pandemic, a war, an energy shock).
These are no countries for young men. (The same, by the way, is true of most of East Asia.) Since 1960, across the 38 advanced economies that belong to the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the old-age dependency ratio (people age 65 and over per 100 people ages 15 to 64) has doubled from around 15 to around 30, while fertility has plunged from 3.3 to 1.5. Youth just matters less than it used to. …
This aging trend is not about to stop. Across the OECD, the dependency ratio is forecast to rise from 32.6 seniors per 100 people of working age in 2024 to 55.2 in 2054 — a 69 percent increase. The working-age population will decline by 13 percent over the next four decades across the OECD. (In Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland the decline will exceed 35 percent.)
You’re seeing the same thing happening in the United States. Add gigantic welfare, mass migration, and what you wind up with is Europe.
If you look at international migrants as a percentage of the overall population in European countries from 1990 to 2024, there is only one outlier: Poland, which has basically banned migration. But every other major Western country in Europe has imported vast numbers of immigrants from the Third World and radical Muslim areas.
What we are facing is the importation of people who hate us at home, plus a gigantic welfare state that acts as a magnet for those people to effect the transformation of our culture and the destruction of our fundamental values.
But don’t worry: Welfare will pay for all of it.
Wait. Who pays for it in the end? Who really pays for it?
The answer: No one. No one wants to pay for it. The future will pay for it.
It’s a prescription for civilizational collapse. That is what you are asking for.
We are watching it happen in real time in France. What are they going to do about it? More socialism, more communism, more social welfare? It’s not possible. France is already one of the most spendthrift countries on Earth when it comes to government expenditure. The same thing is true of Italy. The same thing is true of the U.K.
Where do they go from here? What is being asked for?
The answer: nothing. Nothing is being asked for. Everything is being demanded.
This is why you are seeing statues being defaced, why you see the flag of demand — the Palestinian flag — flying at every one of these rallies.
This is not a protest over union pensions or pay. This is a protest demanding that the civilization itself be torn to the ground, that the civilization is fundamentally corrupt.
Are we going to do that here at home? This isn’t limited to what’s going on in Europe. It’s happening right here at home.
A clear example is Mahmoud Khalil. Mahmoud Khalil is an antisemitic, anti-Israel, anti-American activist who was imported to the United States to a major university to make trouble and fight Western civilization. He was the leader of a group that called for the destruction of Western civilization.
The Trump administration wants to deport him. He was arrested. Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously said that Khalil’s presence or activities would compromise a compelling U.S. foreign policy interest, and vowed to strip the immigration status of foreign Hamas supporters. A federal judge in New Jersey ordered Khalil’s release from ICE detention. Now Khalil is asking the Supreme Court to save him because he is about to be deported.
He tweeted that he has rights. It was reminiscent of the old 19th-century French adage that said, “When I am the weaker, I ask you for my freedom because that is your principle; but when I am the stronger, I take away your freedom because that is my principle.”
You see, we owe it to foreigners to come to our country and hate us. We owe it to them. That’s the central argument on a moral level that Mahmoud Khalil is making. He can couch that in legalese. He can pretend he’s arguing about the various rights held by green card holders. But at root, the question for the civilization is: Do we owe it to Mahmoud Khalil to import him?
Do we owe it to Ilhan Omar to import her, keep her here, and keep her entire family? Do we owe it to Zohran Mamdani’s parents or Abdul El-Sayed’s parents? Do we owe these people an obligation to bring them here? Is our civilization guilty?
And so, because our civilization is guilty, we’re going to import a bunch of people here, and then we’re going to welfare everyone to death? We’ll blame capitalism, and we’ll blame the American system, and we’ll blame colonialism to compensate for all of that?
That is the big question for our civilization. No civilization can survive the kind of self-destruction we’re undergoing.
This is what this fight is about. It is all the same fight everywhere.
It is the forces of civilization against the forces of anti-civilization.
