The sentence was handed down to 39-year-old Rigoberto Ramon Miranda-Orozco, a Guatemalan national who pleaded guilty earlier this year to his involvement in a human smuggling operation that left 53 people dead. Miranda-Orozco admitted to organizing the smuggling of dozens of illegal immigrants found dead in the back of a locked tractor-trailer in Texas in June 2022.
“To those who believe they can avoid accountability by cowering in a foreign country, Miranda-Orozco thought the same,” said U.S. Attorney Justin Simmons. “Because of this Administration’s commitment to holding accountable all of those who support transnational criminal organizations, he now knows otherwise.”
Six children and at least one pregnant woman were among the victims. The tractor-trailer, abandoned by human smugglers, did not have working air conditioning, and the heat quickly turned deadly for those trapped inside.
“As the temperature inside the trailer rose, chaos ensued. Some aliens screamed and banged on the walls for help. Some passed out, unconscious. Others clawed at the sides of the trailer attempting to escape,” the indictment against Miranda-Orozco said.
The scheme involved transporting illegal immigrants from Guatemala into the United States through Mexico. Those being smuggled typically paid $12,000 to $15,000 to get across the border, and their phones were taken away once they entered the trailer, according to prosecutors.
Miranda-Orozco personally agreed to smuggle two of the victims into the United States.
Miranda-Orozco pled guilty in July 2026 to conspiracy to bring an alien into the United States resulting in death, aiding and abetting bringing an alien into the United States resulting in death, and aiding and abetting bringing an alien into the United States resulting in serious bodily injury. The United States extradited Miranda-Orozco from Guatemala in March 2025.
Responding to the tragedy at the time, Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued an order to “create and implement a checkpoint strategy beginning immediately where they will begin targeting trucks like the one that was used where these people perished.”
Assistant Attorney General Tysen Duva said former President Joe Biden’s porous border policies encouraged smugglers to flood people across the southern border.
“By refusing to secure our borders, the Biden administration empowered human smugglers across the globe to take advantage of our country and break our laws for financial gain,” Duva said. “These smugglers value profits over people.”
