Ilhan Abdullahi Omar, you know it,” Omar told Fox News Digital when a reporter caught up with her at Karmel Mall in Minneapolis, where she was headed to Friday prayers. “It’s Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.
The exchange came a day after reports that people familiar with the ongoing investigation into the congresswoman, including a law enforcement source, identified her name as Ilhan Nur Said Elmi. The name also matches that of Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, the man Omar married in 2009. Allegations that the two are siblings have circulated for years, but Omar has repeatedly denied them.
Federal prosecutors used the name “Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar” in a court filing seeking to delay the release of records connected to a search warrant for Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence. The filing does not explain why prosecutors used the alternate name.
Omar’s office has forcefully disputed the reporting. Her spokesperson told Fox News Digital that claims her name is Ilhan Nur Said Elmi are “completely false” and described the allegations surrounding her former marriage as a “disgusting conspiracy theory.”
Omar also attacked President Donald Trump on social media Friday, accusing him of using the Justice Department to promote political attacks against her.
“The pedophile protection party’s president is laundering right-wing conspiracy theories through the most corrupt DOJ in American history,” Omar wrote on X. “Whenever the news turns bad, this creep reaches for one name: mine. So let’s make it crystal clear. My name has always been Ilhan Omar.”
She concluded by telling Trump to focus on Vice President JD Vance’s name instead.
The dispute comes as federal authorities investigate possible immigration fraud involving Omar or her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, in connection with the family’s arrival in the United States. Homeland Security Investigations agents searched Omar’s Washington residence on October 12 and seized electronic devices and documents, according to reporting on the investigation. Authorities have also issued subpoenas to members of her family.
Omar has not yet been charged with a crime. She has characterized the investigation as politically motivated and said federal authorities have not explained its scope to her. On Friday, she said investigators had not briefed her on what they were examining, according to CBS.
Public records, including the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library, listed Omar’s birth year as 1981 until her congressional staff asked in 2019 that it be changed to 1982. The year matters because Omar has said she derived citizenship through her father in 2000, at age 17. If she was born in 1981, she would have been too old to qualify that way.
The broader allegations have also prompted renewed attention to Omar’s 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi and the circumstances surrounding her subsequent marital history. Omar has denied that Elmi was her brother or that their marriage was arranged to facilitate immigration fraud.
The records underlying the search warrant remain sealed. In the same Wednesday motion that used the Elmi name, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro urged the court to reject media requests to unseal the materials, arguing that agents are still executing the warrant.
