Freedom Is Back In Style
The growing divide between men and women has been in the spotlight of cultural commentary for years now, but a unique aspect of it is often overlooked: That divide, while real, isn’t equally caused by both sides.

A recent survey from the Survey Center on American Life has found that while 26% of young Republican men say that women are to blame for men’s problems, a staggering 66% of young Democratic women blame women’s problems on men.
Perhaps this shouldn’t be surprising in a culture dealing with a dating, marriage, and sex recession, but it is disheartening. The reality is that we live in a world where bestselling books like “How to Date Men When You Hate Men,” and “dump him” sweaters aren’t so much controversial as they are superfluous. In many circles today, dating has been all but stamped out as a microaggression, annoying, or even … cringe.
I can imagine our grandchildren asking about the old world we inhabited, one in which nervous teenage boys could still ask girls out on coffee dates with a confidence that hadn’t yet been whittled down by mainstream narratives about male incompetence. How did grandpa do it, they might wonder, without giving up before he even tried?
What emboldened grandpa’s confidence was found in something required of men and women: a reverent curiosity about the opposite sex. This is the inexplicable belief that hidden in the mystery of the other is something essential to yourself.
Women are losing that sense much faster than young men. Today, implying that women and men are interconnected in a mysterious and essential way is a heresy that rejects the revered ideal of women’s independence. There is no shortage of online content that blissfully imagines life without men, as if their existence were an afterthought or even a mistake of nature.
A popular video has circulated online boasting that “the earth is filled with women and their children.” True enough, but it is also equally true that the earth is filled with men and their children—a blaringly obvious fact that I mentioned in a comment. I was swiftly rebuked in the replies. Apparently, I didn’t “get the point” of the original video.
Believe me, I got the point: Women’s resentment toward men has grown so strong that it is now offensive to remind women of the basic facts of human reproduction, biology, and nature.
Many women believe they can treat men the way goldfish treat bicycles, living a life that is blissfully unimpacted by their existence. Such an analogy is utterly unserious. Every woman owes her existence to one man, and her well-being is tied to his involvement and care. Men aren’t irrelevant or toxic. They’re needed.
Suffice it to say that there isn’t much of a future in store for a society that treats one half of humanity as a hindrance to our collective well-being. I don’t want our grandchildren to inherit a world that thinks that way, but the very existence of grandchildren assumes a future in which men and women continue to fall in love, marry, and procreate—precisely the future that is lost if this one-sided beef continues to grow.
