Former Vice President Kamala Harris appears to be testing out a new oratory style, and it’s not great.

Harris, speaking to a group of Culinary Workers Union members in Las Vegas, sounded more like she was talking to young children as she lowered her voice and dramatically slowed her cadence.

“That era of feeling powerless, like what can we do, this just keeps happening, that era is over because we are now 13 days away from doing something about it to stop the pain,” she said.

“So that’s where we are right now, and that’s kind of exciting, right?” she continued, her tone equal parts airy and condescending. “This is some good stuff. Like, we’re taking our power, we’re using it, to determine who will hold offices like being the governor of Nevada. Which is so important for the people everyday on the most basic issues that affect our lives. Who will continue to walk those halls of Congress being an extraordinary fighter.”

Harris has often been mocked for her speaking style — and her penchant for word-salad-style answers to even the most basic questions.

Changes to her overall speech patterns have often been attributed to “code-switching,” or adopting different mannerisms based on the audience in front of her. Harris is far from the only politician to do that — and she’s also not the only one to net disastrous results from it.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, for example, was roundly mocked for adopting a southern accent despite growing up in Chicago.

One memorable example came during a 2007 speech at a black church in Selma, Alabama, as she campaigned for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

“I don’t feel no ways tired,” she drawled, reciting the words of James Cleveland’s classic freedom hymn. “I come too far from where I started from. Nobody told me that the road would be easy. I don’t believe he brought me this far to leave me.”

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
