Meghan Markle Made A Play For Kamala’s U.S. Senate Seat: Report

It’s no secret that Meghan Markle is an incorrigible social climber, but the scale of her ambition is just now coming to light. According to a new report from The New York Post, Markle had her sights set on the United States Senate.

This would be amusing enough if Markle were nothing but a D-list actress, which was true for years before she sank her claws into the rebellious British royal Prince Harry. Now that they’re married, her rumored political ambitions are even more ridiculous.

Markle was eyeing the U.S. Senate seat vacated by former Vice President Kamala Harris, the Post reported, citing a source. The former British working royal reportedly had a sit-down with California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom just weeks before the 2020 presidential election because she “wanted to be considered to be appointed,” a source told the outlet.

Newsom’s office has a record of the meeting, which at the time was pitched as a “welcome to California” chat. It remains unclear whether Markle was ever seriously considered.

A Sussex source denied the allegation that Markle was gunning for Harris’ vacant seat. Reps for The Duchess of Sussex did not immediately respond to The Daily Wire’s request for comment.

The royal couple has been associated with politicians before. In 2021, they allegedly requested a meeting with then-President Joe Biden and wanted to stay at Blair House, which is usually reserved for diplomatic leaders, the Post reported. That request was denied. 

In 2025, Markle responded to a question on her political ambitions, denying that she was interested in running for office. When pressed if she would really “never” run, the Duchess of Sussex replied, “I mean you could say, never say never …” then quickly repeated, “No. Never.” 

British royals traditionally don’t comment on American politics or endorse candidates, which is why so many followers were surprised when Prince Harry and Markle made statements that sounded like support for the Biden-Harris ticket in September 2020. 

“Every four years we are told the same thing, that this is the most important election of our lifetime,” Markle said in their video message at the time. “But this one is. When we vote, our values are put into action and our voices are heard. Your voice is a reminder that you matter, because you do and you deserve to be heard.”

Prince Harry chimed in, saying, “This election, I’m not going to be able to vote here in the U.S. But many of you may not know that I haven’t been able to vote in the U.K. my entire life. As we approach this November, it’s vital that we reject hate speech, misinformation, and online negativity.”

It was just announced that the royal couple is moving back to the United Kingdom after living stateside for the past six years. This comes after several failed lifestyle and entertainment ventures, including an abandoned podcast and a nine-figure Netflix deal that was later downgraded to a less lucrative arrangement due to an extreme lack of interest.
